Traveling with cat

We're driving down with our cat to NC tomorrow.  It should take 5.5 hours but given the weather situation I suspect it'll take longer.  Can he go without food for that long (plus a bit so he won't need to go to the bathroom while in the car)?  He probably needs water...how do you do this?

Re: Traveling with cat

  • Hmm. I don't know what to do with the water but we feed my cat twice a day. She doesn't have food all day because she eats like a dog and would gorge herself. But for that amount of time it should be okay I would think.  Do you know how he travels in the car (does it freak him out)? My cat would lose her mind just being in the car that long.

  • He will be fine without food.  I feed my cat twice a day once at 5 AM and once at 8 PM.  And she is fine.

You might offer him water half way when you stop, but the cat most likely won't drink anything anyways.  My cat refuses to eat or drink when she is stressed.  It won't hurt him.  Just make sure he has water when you get where you are going.

  • I've done the drive from Atlanta to Texas (and the reverse) twice with my cats.  I offered them food and water in their crates, but neither of them really wanted it.  Clover pooped in her crate once, but I just shook out the towel into the trash when we stopped.

My doc said we could give the cats Children's Benadryl to help with the car ride, but they REALLY didn't like it and I don't think they actually swallowed any.  I don't remember the dosage.

  • I have traveled close to 16 hours with my diabetic cat and have found that they usually won't eat even if you give them the option.  Mine was fine without food or water for 5 hrs or so when I brought him home from college.  You can try to offer him water when you stop, but he may be too nervous to drink it.

  • I did this with my cat several years ago.  I let him out of the carrier as soon as I got in the car and he spent most of the trip sitting in the front seat looking out the window.  But he's become a little more...high strung recently and the only car trips recently have resulted in vet visits.

  • I bought a water bottle from petsmart that had this flip out bowl thing attached.  I think I have seen them at target too.

  • Your cat should be fine.  If you make a stop see if your cat will drink, but most likely they won't eat or drink on the road.

    Good luck!

  • when we moved 13 hours away with our cats the vet said to give them benadryl (1 tablet each) and just water for the car portion. We just fed them at night and it was fine - but they meowed the ENTIRE drive. Bring headphones.
  • We drove our cat from Austin to Guadalajara, MX 6 times!  It is an 19 hour drive.  We offered her water but she refused.  We were given tranquelizers by our vet but it made her go cross-eyed and I refused to give it to her again.
