How big does a diaper bag need to be?

We saw some on skip hop that we liked, but someone had mentioned that they're a bit small. I saw another one, but it looked huge. What kind of size tends to be optimal? Anyone know?

Re: How big does a diaper bag need to be?

  • I had a big one that I bought before DD was born and I ended up hating it!  Sure, I could carry one of everything in it, but I didn't need all of that stuff while I was out and it was so heavy and bulky that I often ended up leaving it in the car, which makes it sort of pointless.

This time, I got a small one.  I only plan to carry one or two changes of clothing, burp rag, diapers, wipes, butt cream, and an extra pacifier.  Maybe an extra blanket and a nursing cover.  That sounds like a lot, but those items don't take up much space.

  • I agree - I like smaller ones as well. With 2U2 I have enough other things to haul around ;)

As long as it fits - diapers, travel wipes, a few bibs, diaper cream, a light blanket you should be good.

  • I bought a big one before DD was born, and I too, hated mine. I actually just use the small black one we got free from Similac at the hospital. You just need to carry diapers, wipes, burp rag, an extra change of clothes and a little make-up bag to carry diaper rash cream, extra pacifier, socks and tylenol. We get everything in there and more. When I had my big bag, I hated carrying it around. I thought I needed her whole room with me!
  • I have the Skip*Hop City Chic - it's plenty big but not overwhelmingly so and it's fairly lightweight.  Has all of the pockets I can imagine needing for diapers, creams, wipes, snacks and all plus a good amount of open space for a blanket, change of clothes, etc.  I can't imagine needing more room but, I don't think I'd want less.

  • I have the SkipHop Studio tote and I love it!
  • Did you all usually carry your own purse around too? I ask b/c I already carry a big purse just for my stuff-water bottle, snack or two, or 5...tissues, ipod, wallet, phone, etc.  I'm always hungry. Would the skip hop bag still be able to accommodate all of my crap too?

  • i agree with everyone.  i had a big one and it drove me nuts.  i switched to a smaller one and it was so much easier.  i also keep an "emergency" kit in the car (clothes, diapers, wipes, formula, etc..) so i never had a problem.  with kid #2 i am hoping to get a backpack instead.  i think it'll be easier with a baby and a toddler.  there are SO many cute ones out there.  but you'll find what works for you.  i would recommend a side holder for bottles.  easier and quicker to access.

  • The Skip*Hop City Chic will absoultely be able to carry all of that in addition to baby gear (plus my big camera and Flip) - I'm not sure the Studio tote would.  I don't plan on carrying a purse with the diaper bag - too cumbersome.

Do you have a place near you that carries their bags so you could check them out in person?  My local Destination Maternity store had both, so I was able to compare IRL..
