car seat placement

Does the car seat go behind the driver, the passenger or the in the middle?

Or does it really matter?

Re: car seat placement

  • I think you'll need to read your owner's manual.

For my car, the seat went in the middle.  In DH's newer car with LATCH, we put it on the passenger side because DH would have been squished up against the steering wheel if the seat was behind him.

  • I can depend on your car seat and car.  Check your car owner's manual, because it usually has a section on car seat installation.  It may tell you the best place for your car seat.

It is easier to see LO if the car seat is not behind the driver's seat.

  • Our fire dept. won't put a car seat behind the drivers side because they don't want any driver to be uncomfortable, and therefor unsafe.  I know folks do sometimes put them behind the driver though.

Our car seat cannot go in the middle due to our car having a hump there (and the car seat won't accommodate).

  • Middle is generally considered safest but, it depends on your car and the actual car seat.  The car seat manual will tell you the best location.  For us, it was the passenger side.

  • It does depend on your car. I finally got around to reading my car's owner's manual. It points out that if we're using LATCH, the middle's tethers will be too far apart for most car seats, so we will most likely have to put it on one of the sides.

There isn't a huge safety difference between the sides, but if you put it on the passenger side, you won't have to stand in traffic to get the baby out when you're parallel parked.

  • We had my DD in the middle, but now that there will be 2, each will have to be on a side.

My DD is currently on the passenger side, so the baby will go behind the driver.
