TTC and considering cloth diapers

To those out there that use, or have used, cloth diapers. What is your opinion on them? Aside from the environmental benefits. Honestly, we aren't even considering them if it ends up being too expensive upfront for them. But... I've considered making my own. I plan on getting a sewing machine here soon, and I'm no stranger to sewing, so I think I can do it. Anyone have any experience on making their own? Suggestions? Anyone out there that did do cloth & returned to regular diapers for some reason?

Re: TTC and considering cloth diapers

  • So far we love the cloth diapers.  We are doing it primarily because of the huge cost savings

If you're worried about upfront cost, you might consider prefolds.  They are super cheap and way easier than I ever would have imagined.

  • I'm a 'spoies girl, but wanted to let you know there are a lot of ladies on the AP board who use cloth diapers too- might be a good place to get some info.
  • I can't help you with the sewing thing, but I LOVE cloth diapering. We did prefolds and covers at first, and the upfront costs were pretty low. You can get a dozen good prefolds for about $25 (you'd want 2-3 dozen), plus 5-6 covers at about $10 each and a few Snappis for $4 each, and be set for a couple of months. So that's under $150 to get started.

We've since moved on to Bumgenius 3.0's, now that our son is a little bigger (also economical since they go up to 35 lbs), but many people just do prefolds and covers and it works great for them.

  • We are transitioning into cloth and hybrid diapers.  There are some really good diapers out there.  I've heard Econobum is good - they are by the makers of BumGenius (which I really like) and they are inexpensive.  Basically they are prefolds and covers, but come in one size so they grow with your child.  Cottonbabies.com has them!

  • I am CDing for the first time with this LO and I love it. It really is easy. I also surprisingly love prefolds and covers and those aren't expensive at all. I love the unbleached ones as they are softer. Thirsties covers rock!
  • We CD our kids and love it. We still use sposies when we're out or traveling.

I really  like my Bum Genius's and Thirsties!

  • We are loving CD'g so far. I did TONS of research before baby was here so I suggest you do the same. Great resources on the bump are the eco friendly board and the AP board. My local board is also a huge help so you could also seek out women near you.

https://ourlittlefootprints.blogspot.com/2008/05/cloth-diaper-part-ii-s.html There is quite an upfront cost ranging from maybe $100-$400 depending on the type of diapers you get and how many. This is a good calulator to use though to justify the costs. https://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/5-diap/45-diaper-cost.htm   Good Luck and enjoy researching and looking at all of the cute diapers!!

  • We LOVE cloth diapers!  And I also make my own.  I make fitteds w/ pockets and then use thirsties covers.  We also use Fuzzi Bunz and prefolds/covers, but my faves are the ones I make.  The cost savings is great, but another HUGE bonus is less blowouts.  I hate putting her in sposies because if she has a good size poo it's all the way up her back.  Covers and all in one type diapers all have elastic around the legs and the waist/back so that keeps the poo in, which is great.  I'm really hoping to get a wetbag for when we go out so that I don't have to put sposies on her unless we go on extended overnight trips.

About making your own--it's really not hard.  They have free patterns online, but I just traced a thirsties cover and then made adjustments as I saw fit.  You really just need to know how to sew a straight stitch, a zigzag, add elastic, and then sew on velcro if you want (we use snappis which are easy to learn to use).  Youtube is a great place for do it yourself tutorials!
