3rd Trimester

measuring small at 32 weeks?

I had an u/s today and the baby is measuring "small but normal" according to the doctor. I saw the dates on the screen and it seems that she was measuring to be a week smaller than my EDD. Is this common? Anyone else? I have to go back in 4 weeks for a growth scan. Should I be worried?

Re: measuring small at 32 weeks?

  • Ive had numerous growth u/s (they suspect my little one is growth restricted) and I will say that they have always told me when dates are a week off either way its not a big deal b/c u/s obviously arent exact and usually have a +/- 2 week curve depending on growths spurts, size of parents, etc. I wouldnt worry if I were you :-)

As for growth restrictions they generally need a few u/s's to look at the trends to make sure that the baby isnt just a little baby and generally its not considered growth restriction until the baby's size is under a certain percentile (varies depending on your dr) HTH!

  • I wouldn't worry much. Fundal height is not a very accurate measurement, and one week difference is small. It will be nice to have the u/s and get reassurance that everything is fine - GL
  • We just had a growth scan this past tuesday because i'm measuring small - I think at least 2 weeks behind. Turns out everything is good, baby is of average size, 48th%ile for growth and her measurements varied between the 48th and 56th percentiles. She's weighing in at just over 3 1/2 pounds which is right on track.

Like the pp's said, I wouldnt worry too much about the fundal measurement, right after our ultrasound, we saw the doctor and I was still measuring 2 weeks behind. I dont know if it makes a difference, but i'm fairly tall (5'10) and have a long torso, maybe I just have a lot more room than some down in my pelvis? who knows!!

    Good Luck!

  • Very normal.  A week off is definitely nothing to be concerned about.  There is a tremendous amount of variation in third trimester ultrasounds (research shows as much as 4 week error rate on either side). Usually IUGR is diagnosed when there is dramatic variation in measurement between different body parts (ie the abdomen and head etc).  If she is consistently measuring a week behind on most of her measurements then she is probably just a bit petite (good for mommy).

As long as everything else looks good then there is nothing to worry about.

  • I'm the same way. DS was born full term weighing only 6 lbs, 9 oz. I'm also measuring small at 33 weeks. Just continue to eat healthy and try not to worry.
