I judged, and I'd judge again

Walking down the street in the West Village of NYC, I see 4 kids, 2 girls to boys, literally running up the block.  I'm going to be generous and say no older than 6--but I really think 4 or 5.  They are about 10 feet from the corner and moms/nannies (not sure which) are at the other end of the block.  I'm looking to see who these kids are with and it is not readily apparent.  Then, finally I see the moms/nannies, chitchatting away not even remotely looking at the kids who are fast approaching the corner.  I give them the judgey mcjudgerton stare, just in time for the two little girls to completely disappear around the block.  They are not even halfway up it yet.  THEN when the kids are completely out of sight--they start calling out for them "come back!"  Mmm hmm..."I only looked away for a second, and she was gone!!!"  Yeah.

  • Oh geez....so many bad things can happen in that scenario.  How scary!

  • This boggles my mind everytime I see it. In the grocery store aisles when Mom is still 3 rows over, at the park when the kid's halfway up the slide before Mom even gets out of the car, in McDonalds the kids are running around and Mom's in line. Nicholas never leaves my side, ever when we are out.

I don't trust others and I don't trust him. Kids have crazy split second instincts to run towards something and slow reactions to run away from something.

It's not always a crazy kidnapper, it could be a loose dog running down the street, a drunk driver that jumps the curb, etc.

    I just don't get it.

  • I mean it only takes a second to dart out into traffic.  It only takes a second to run into a subway tunnel (assuming there were some where you were) and get kidnapped.  You just never know.  I'm terrified for those kids.

    Bad nannies!!

I really hope these were not nannies...you want to irresponsible with your own kid, you have no one to blame but yourself.  I can't imagine trusting someone, no wait paying someone to give responsible childcare and have them be so reckless.  I can only imagine the lie they would concoct if something had happened. "Oh, she ran so fast away from me, I tried to catch her!  It happened in a split second"  Split second my a$$.  I watched this thing play out for a good 5 minutes.  Shameful.

It's funny MBW's reply made me think of this and your reply to hers really makes me wonder. Do you think Nannies are more lax and irrespsonsible with their employer's children or their own? I mean with their own, so there's that emotional connection but with someone else's kid there's that responsibility that a paycheck brings so it could go either way . With their own kid if they are irresponsible, it's their own with their employer's kid there's the liability of watching someone else's kid. Do you think they goof off more with their own children of their employers?
