Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Q from 3rd tri - Bassinet

Hi, 1st time mom here.  Our bedroom is upstairs and we have a PNP with a bassinet that we plan to put by the bed for the 1st few weeks.  However, that sucker is too heavy for me to carry downstairs if I want to hang out there.  So I was thinking of purchasing a separate bassinet.

Q is: if you did have a bassinet, did you find it useful?  If you did not do this, where did you place your baby?  Did you put your LO in a swing/bouncy chair, even if not turned on, couch, etc?  Thanks!  I don't want to buy too many things that are unnecessary; at the same time, there is a great deal on a gently used bassinet on Craig's List, and I want to capitalize if you all found it useful.  TIA.

Re: Q from 3rd tri - Bassinet

  • We keep the PNP downstairs as a play to change her & put her down when we are downstairs if need by. My sister loaned me her bassinet and I literally used it once (the first night home from the hospital) after that she slept in her crib. We keep her swing in the nursery & she usually sits in that after her morning feeding while I get dressed, showered & eat breakfast (and work out if im lucky). Her bouncey seat we move around depending on where we are at since its light & easy to move. Honestly, I thought the bassinet was a huge waste, which is why I didnt buy one.

  • We used a bassinet in our room for about 3 weeks for bedtime, and then had a PNP downstairs with me for daytime napping.

You can't leave LO on the couch to snooze b/c even little babies can squirm and roll off. I loved having the PNP downstairs until DS got bigger, so if there's a deal on a bassinet for upstairs, that sounds like a good idea. Or you could save $ and put LO to sleep in the crib right away, if you're OK with baby not being in your room at night (we switched to this around 1 month old, so didn't end up using the bassinet for long).

Yes, after I wrote this, I realized that I would probably have the PNP downstairs and a bassinet upstairs.  And agreed, didn't want to newborn on the couch.  I hope to have the LO in his crib soon (his room is next to ours), so this would only be used for a few weeks, but I just have no idea how things are really going to go!  Thank you (and previous poster) for the info!

  • I am literally debating the exact.same.thing. I am thinking we will have a PnP downstairs and a bassinet (Arms Reach co-sleeper) upstairs for the first few weeks/months. We don't plan on having the baby in our room at night for too long, but of course, we are new to this and will have to just see how things go. Good luck!

Yes, I saw your post too late, as this is kind of a re-post.  Good luck to both of us!

  • We keep our PnP on the main level to use the change table and bassinet, and we bought a separate bassinet for upstairs.

Public Health told us babies should sleep in a room with their parents until they are six months old, so we are not transitioning our son to his crib until then.

Sounds like we both have the same plan in mind for baby's sleeping arrangements! It's hard though since this is our first...we really want to balance the needs vs. the wants and keep things simple. We'll learn as we go :)

  • We live in a 2br condo for the time being.  We didn't want a bassinet, but my grandmother bought one for us anyway.  It's definitely more in-the-way than it is useful.  We haven't used it once.

We have a PNP that we keep at my mother's house for when we visit, and it will be easy to take that when we visit the ILs.  We also have an infant travel bed (which we haven't used yet, but I think it will be useful for taking on day trips and to the babysitter's house etc.)

I'm definitely anti-bassinet at this point, lol.

  • I had a C-section and having a bassinet on the 1st floor was the best thing since I had to limit my stair climbing.  Even after I was able to go up and down the stairs just fine, I still used the bassinet because it's so much easier than always going up and and down the stairs to put LO to sleep, feed him, or change his diaper.  Unfortunately, DS is starting to outgrow his bassinet.
