so i just put timmy down for a nap and was sitting on the couch updating the blog. we live on the top floor of a walkup, but the door to my apt is a floor below (you walk straight in to the stairs). i had my front door unlocked b/c my mom was supposed to be coming over. i just heard my front door open, but no one said anything. i heard someone start coming up the stairs w/keys jingling. i finally said "mom?" b/c usually she says something. no response. dogs start barking, movement stops. i then said "tim?" thinking maybe dh came home and forgot something. no response. so i frantically started saying. "mom, tim? who is it" the person runs down the stairs of the bldg, leaving my front door wide open. i tried to run to the window to see what i could see, but our christmas tree and a big baby gate are blocking the window so it was hard for me to get there in time. i have no idea how they got in front door of the bldg. i am so freaked out. i opened the baby gate to the stairs and let the dogs out first b/c i wanted them to scare the person. i feel like i could burst out crying. i locked all the doors but i don't know what to do.

Re: someone just broke into my house - w/us inside!
oh no, maybe someone got the wrong place? regardless, how scary!
eta: i would call the police to be safe.
Oh no! I'm so sorry. Can you call the police and ask them to send a car over to patrol the area for a little bit? That might make you feel a little safer.
I hope that your mom gets there soon so that she can give you a big hug.
That is really scary. I wonder if you should call the cops?
when you go into our bldg there are only 2 apts you can go in, and i know the people downstairs are at work, so i find this unlikely.
This is the second story like this on here this month! The first ones were barging through the door even though it was locked! The alarm was the only thing that scared them away.
Home invasions are happening more often with the bad economy. I'm so sorry you were scared like this! I just can't imagine.
oh dear. this time of year is ripe with break-ins...that is so terrifying. i'm sorry.
That's scary! Is the entrance to the apt confusing in any way? Maybe someone got confused like pp said. Either way you might want to call the cops and give them a heads up. They may not do anything, and it might have been totally innocent, but at least you have a record on file if anything else happens.
I'm glad you & Timmy are okay.
Oh gosh that is scary. I would talk to the building security ASAP and find out how they made it up.
Could it have been apt maintenance or landlord since it sounds like they had keys?
Yes this too
I'm glad you're okay. Obviously they were hoping no one was home, so at least they took off. I'm going to be your mom for a minute and say lock your front door! I don't care who you're expecting! It's very unsettling when someone has been in your house. I know how you feel. ((hugs))
I would be totally freaking. Hopefully it was just someone going to the wrong place by accident. The jingle of keys would throw me off. Well I am sure your dogs scared them off.
I agree maybe you should call the police.
this happened to us while I was home on bedrest!
Yes, call the police, if for nothing else, to have a report on it. The police were GREAT with me, and they drove by our house all the time for weeks and came and checked on me and stuff.
It was the most surreal shiite ever. I'll get back on facebook (haven't been there in like 2 months) and tell you about it over winter break!
Glad you're ok-- I know exactly how bizarre this feels.
OMG! Definetly call the police and at least make a report in case he goes to other homes in the area. And, call your DH. How scary!!!
Our door bell rang repeatedly the other night at 1:30 am for no reason and it scared me shitless!! I called the police but I think it was just an electrical thing.
How scary! At least your mom is coming over so you don't have to be alone. I'm glad you and Timmy are ok!
Two angel babies 11/09 and 4/10
oh crap! scary stuff! I'm hoping someone just had the wrong house. It happens. So glad it wasn't someone coming in with intent to do you harm!!!
C, this is a copy and paste of my email sent to my friends at work when it happeened:
My house was broken into an hour ago! About 30-40 min ago, someone started to ring doorbell repeatedly and making my dog crazy.. After at least 8 tims I got up to answer. A big guy asked if I knew where a street was, I said no and I'm sorry I can't help you but I am on bedrest for a pregnacy conditon and had to go back to bed. I locked the door. Not 2 minutes later, I heard my dog runing back and forth downstairs excitedly not barking just running, trying to play. I just knew that something was wrong, that someone was there, and I called 911 immediately. I was on the phone with them starting to explain when suddenly a different man but dressed identically came upstairs! THe top of stairs is about 10 feet from my room, and he came about 2 feet when we could see each other and I said to 911 "THere's definitely someone in my house, I' m looking at him. He turned and ran. Police came, and looked around-- and sure enough, soeone slit the screen to one of our basement windows and opened it! THe police are still her investigating, talking to neighbors, etc. Nothing is missing downstairs, but guy #2 came UPSTAIRS. That almost makes me wonder if he wasn't here for me. Our house is like every othe r on the block, nothing speical aobut us, not even a plasma TV! I'm not scared but in shock. Police are wondering why they still chose this house even with a German shepherd (how did they know he was friendly dog, Asra you know my dog doesn't react to strangers except wth excitement) and knowing someone was home. Other neighbors saw the intuders and are helping. Police are bringing a tracking dog right now. Can my life be any more crzy? Hi guys, So here's a follow up from yesterday's big adventure. Many police and detectives were in and out for several hours. There were 6 squad cars here and a tracking dog. My grandparents-in-law came to sit with me and Joey came home early. A few neighbors noted the car in front of our house and described it to police, as well as seeing guy #1 come to the door while guy #2 went around back. One of the dummies ran several houses down into a neighbor's backyard and she saw him, too. The dog lost him in her front yard, so that must be where the other guy picked him up in the car. The guy who entered the house took off the screen and jimmied the basement window to undo the lock. Joey's mom had been here to bring me lunch and had JUST left minutes before the doorbell ringer guy came, so the detectives think the guys picked our house because they saw someone leave nice house, nice neighborhood, assuming she was the homeowner. They think the guy at the door was trying to see if anyone was there and since it took so long to answer that guy #2 assumed it was ok. Hee hee, I think that poor idiot was more scared than I was!! Police think he came upstairs to try to get money/jewelry because it's easiest to steal. There are clear footprints in the snow as well as tracked into the basement, and they dusted for fingerprints all around the window. They could not belive that he entered the house after seeing our dog! I agree-- my dog is 100 lbs. and looks like a wolf. Absurdly, the dog was trying to play with a home intruder! But still, because I know my dog so well and his behavior, even though Iceland didn't attack him, I still owe it to my dog that I called 911. The detectives said they have some "usual suspects" ideas, but called to tell me that one of them is in County (heh, I guess we'll let him off the hook). He's bringing by a picture for me to look at, though I didn't see the guy in my house very well- I saw the guy at the door much better. I may even be asked to do a police sketch!! I am fine, really and truly. I was more jacked-up than scared. I think it's because by the time I saw the guy in my house, I was already on the phone with 911, and it happened so fast, and also because of my experience the night I was hospitalized- almost nothing can be as scary as that, if that makes sense. My husband is furious. He already moved the gun into the bedroom. (I know how to use it, and the intruder is lucky that it wasn't in here-- course, I'm lucky he wasn't armed, so I guess we're even). But the real hero is the dog, so I make Joey give him lots of cookies. Ok, who knew I'd write a book here. Just thought I'd give you an update on a rather interesting event.it's an old 4 story bldg, w/one front entrance for the top 2 units. it's a condo so we don't have a landlord, but our maintenance guy DOES have keys. i don't think he'd be stupid enough to try and break in. i hope not. problem is the bldg was a rehab and the guy we all bought from is BEYOND shady and we never changed the front bldg locks, so he and god knows who would have keys. i'm calling the board and getting new locks put on asap.
OMG how scary! Just keep your door lock - ALWAYS! Make your mom knock next time :-)
I agree with a pp. Call the cops and at least report the incident. Thank goodness they ran away and didn't hurt you guys!
Sweetie, I'm so glad you and Timmy are okay, and I agree, you should call the police.
