Being induced and going natural?

My original plan was to go drug-free, but I'm anxious about having to be induced with Pitocin.  I've heard that it makes contractions stronger, faster...kind of the point I suppose.  Anyone given birth without an epidural after being chemically induced?

Re: Being induced and going natural?

  • I was induced and I didn't notice that the contrations were bad until they broke my water, THEN they were beyond intense. I only lasted an hour before I got the epidural but I was always planning on getting one. GL

  • I have seen a couple of birth stories on the birth story board about this.  It is possible.  According to my Bradley teacher, you can ask for them to start you out on a low dose of pitocin to jump start labor without getting the intense contractions that high doses of pitocin will cause.

  • I didn't go all the way, but I was induced and went for about 14 hours before I had to have a csection for failure to progress. It wasn't difficult for me at all, but I don't think I was having regular contractions

  • Here's a recent birth story from another nestie who was induced and went natural. Connor's birth story

I have a friend who was also induced with her first and still went natural. With her second she went natural and never had to be induced. She enjoyed and was more relaxed with the second but thinks it had more to do with her irritation over the dr pushing the pit on her, then the actual labor itself. (Sometimes it's that pyschological hold that holds us back from relaxing enough). Either way she did it. I plan to talk with her more if I get passed my EDD and my dr starts talking about inducing.

This too. My dr has said that the benefit of pitocin is that they can turn it down or turn it off as things progress.

  • I was induced at 42 weeks with my 2nd daughter and the contractions are pretty bad once the water broke hardly bearable but I held out and went with no pain killers...thankfully tho she came out in 30 min of water breaking :)
  • I have not, but our doula has coached someone through a pitocin induction with no pain meds.
  • I have yet to post my birth story nor change my ticker, but I had my baby early yesterday morning.  I was induced and had an epidural, HOWEVER, I had back and rectum labor which the epidural does NOTHING for.  The pain was quite intense.
  • Does being induced always require Pitocen? Or are there other ways of being induced?
  • I did Smile  I was induced at 39 wks with DD.  Received pitocin at 9pm, contractions started around 1am, and baby was born at 10am.  It was an awesome experience.  I knew going in that I wasn't going to be able to receive a epi due to the meds I was on so we prepared using the Bradley method which I highly recommend.  I spent a lot of time on the birthing ball just rocking back and forth, counted the waves of my contractions (up as they grew worse and down as they subsided), and had cds with my favorite songs.  I'm hoping this delivery will go as good since again, I'll be induced and still not be allowed the epi.  It can be done!!!
  • I was induced with my first and made it all the way drug fee, it was not easy and there were moments when I wanted to cry. Don't cry, don't scream..... it takes too much energy. Although it can be done it's not an easy journey getting to 10cm. I was stuck at 7cm for 4 hours.... not progressing when your in pain is SUPER frustrating.  I remember my mom telling me "honey you don't have to prove anything, we know your tough just get some drugs" It's tough for a mother to watch her daughter in so much pain. In my eyes my mother was my inspiration delivering 4 girls all natural two of which were big twins!

You can do it! Just be open to whatever is best for you and baby!

    Cheers!!

  • Even though I would love to go without an epidural, if I have to be induced I will be having an epidural. I have heard that contractions with pitocin are horrible and come so quickly you don't have time to recover.

Ditto!  My doula suggested the same - should I be induced, we'll just start out with a low dose to get labor started on it's own.

  • I think part of it depends on how ready your body is for labor. Are you dilated/effaced/baby down and ready?
