s/o swearing in front of kids

So here's my DH's point of view, which we constantly argue about.....he thinks that we should speak freely in front of our kids and use whatever language we want, but enforce that this is "adult language only" and punish the kids if they use it. That's how he grew up---his dad has a horrible mouth and never watched his language, but it was understood that DH and his siblings were not allowed to use the same words or they'd be in big trouble.

I personally think this is ridiculous. I think we should set a good example and not be hypocrites. DH won't budge on this though because he says they really truly learned that cursing was for adults only and never even used it at school or with friends or anything. I don't buy it though. Thoughts?

  • It's not okay either way, for a child or an adult.  And I think that's a really crummy rule IMO.

  • I think that's ridiculous and would definitley be on your side in that argument.

i am on your side - for the reasons you mentioned. my dad cussed like a sailor but we weren't allowed to. where do they think we learned all that???

and, I don't think it's funny when a little kid cusses. whatsoever!

  • That was the rule at our house too. Now that I am grown, I look back and think that my mom didn't have enough respect for us to watch her mouth around us. Like, it didn't matter, because it was just us, but if someone important were around, or if she were at work, she wouldn't say those things. I try not to curse around DS (getting better and better as time goes by). I want him to know that I respect him, and would like to earn his respect too.

I never cursed either as a kid, but I still think there has to be a better way to instill that. It does seem hypocritical to me as well.

  • I'll go with you on this one.

  • Hmm that is actually kinda interesting, but I recently heard a little kid swear and I remember thinking to myself "I don't want DD to know what the f word is until she is 30!" I don't swear very much at all and am planning on never doing it in front of her and my DH is working on this..he isn't that bad either, but working all day with a bunch of guys who swear every other word kinda rubs off on him :)

I never heard of teaching them about bad words and saying it is adult language only, kinda like beer is only for adults..lol, but fwiw and my opinion only I don't think swearing should be categorized as "for adults.." to a child I don't think they should even know those words and I think it is unattractive when adults swear..
