Olivia failed her hearing test again

At 3 weeks old she passed in one ear and failed the other, so we had to go retest today. She failed in one ear again Sad

It doesn't mean that she necessarily has hearing loss in that ear, but maybe it's not developed yet.  She can hear out of her left ear just fine.

They don't want to send her for the hospital test yet b/c they'd have to sedate her.  We have to take her back in one month to test again.

    Oh, no!  I hope it is fluid or just something minor.  I hope everything goes well in a month.  I was actually thinking about her this morning.  Good luck.

    The pediatrician checked her ears this morning, no fluid or anything.  It would break my heart if she can't hear perfectly, but I'm thankful everything else seems to be healthy with her and she can hear out of her left ear just fine.  Her daddy is a musician and I've always dreamed her loving music too, that's what I keep thinking about every time she fails this test.

    Sweetie, I understand that you're worried.  I think we all would be.  Even if she does have a hearing loss in the one ear (many infants don't pass but have perfect hearing) she can still hear and love music.

    Did they look in her ears? Maybe she just has some fluid in there.

    Hope she passes the next test.

    I'm an Audiologist in a hospital and we do the follow-ups to the hearing screenings.  At our hospital we do the full test right away if a baby does not pass the first screening so that parents do not have to spend all this time worrying the way you are.  Also, we don't sedate kids until they're AT LEAST 6 months old.  I would see if there's another facility in your area that will offer the full test under natural sleep.  Most babies will sleep through the test if they are a bit sleep deprived and you bring them hungry and feed in the office.  I feel bad that you're having to worry about this because of screenings when it's generally so easy to just do the full test.

    FWIW, my youngest failed 3 tests, then passed the 4th.
