DH & I haven't 100% decided if we're going to have the NT scan or not...we don't have downs syndrome or any other condition on either sides of our family, so we're leaning towards NOT having it...thoughts?
We aren't. In normal situations, we only get one u/s and that is at 20 weeks. I had one at 6 weeks though because I had horrible cramping and almost passed out.
We are not. If the baby did have Down's, we would not terminate the pregnancy...and I'd rather not dwell on it for the rest of the time. Our chances are so low since we're both young and healthy, plus we would have to pay OOP. It's just not worth it to us.
Also, FWIW, my OB said Down's has nothing to do with family history.
BFP #1 11/28/09 ~ EDD 8/6/10 ~ DS Born 8/9/10 BFP #2 8/27/13 ~ EDD 5/8/14 ~ Natural MC 9/18/13 at 6 weeks, 6 days BFP#3 3/28/14 ~ EDD 12/7/14 ~ DD Born 11/21/14 BFP#4 6/15/17 ~ EDD 2/20/18
I don't think we're doing it. My doctor went over tests that we could take, but since we're both relatively young and not at high-risk for any genetic issues, we're going to pass. We're lucky enough to be able to get an ultrasound 1x/mo due to multiples and keeping an eye on my cervix, so I'll be happy with those.
We're not. The results wouldn't change anything and my OB told me that the test isn't always accurate. I'd rather not worry for 9 months over something that could or couldn't be.
we are definitely not having the test. we would not terminate the pregnancy. also, the tests are not always accurate. infact, tests showed that DH should have been born with downs and he was fine so they made MIL worry all that time for absolutely nothing.

Were not becasue it isn't covered by tricare. I would like to only becasue I would like to be prepard and have my family prepard if there were to be somthing wrong, but I wouldn't terminate so that was not an issue. It is just that I have been with someone who go the shock of a liftime when their child was born with downs. It was very tramatic. Granted she had all of the test and there was nothing you could have done to prepare her, but for me if I could know I would want to just so I could get use to it and be ready for it when the baby got here.
We are not. I would not terminate so it doesn't really matter. Although it would be nice to have a heads up to prepare myself before meeting the little one, but I am not really worried about it!
We're not having it. I am pretty sure my insurance would cover it, but I am not worried about Downs, so I knew if I decided to do it it would only be "for fun" and I just felt like that was abusing the system (health care spending is out of control... they charge $700 ON TOP of regular u/s charges for an NT scan, and even though insurance "covers it" we are paying for that in our premiums!). So, I suppose I am abstaining for somewhat political reasons, but also, I did have the NT with last pregnancy, and they found a cyst that caused a lot of unnecessary worry. I'm trying to be a little more easy going this time and avoiding unnecessary tests is a good first step.
We are not getting one. We would not terminate and my Dr. didn't recommend it for us. She actually tries to do as few U/S as possible to limit the exposure. Unless anything worrisome comes up we will just get the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Maybe a growth scan at the end as was done with DS.
We won't. We didn't last time either. If I remember correctly, it's the NT scan that gives a high rate of false positives for DS. I don't need that worry.

It is my understanding that the NT only gives you an probability (fraction) of a chromosomal abnormality. It is NOT a test for downs - only shows if your probability is higher than others (i.e. you're more likely than other women to have a baby with downs or trisomy 18). And by false positives, it may conclude that these women are more likely than other women, but I'm not sure how that's a false positive. If you're more likely, you're more likely. It doesn't mean you WILL.
If you are at increased risk, it may help you make decisions if you want to do further (more invasive) testing to determine if your child has an abnormality. Getting back a high ratio (e.g. 1:50) does not mean that your child will have downs. It means that your child has a 2% of chance of having downs where most people have a 0.01% (or whatever it may be) chance of having downs.

I also am the first to admit that I dont know anything about caring for a child who has Down Syndrome. In the event that my child does, I would like to be prepared and informed on how to raise him/her.
We are not. The baby is our no matter how Baby T comes out, also we are extremely low risk, per our Doc. If the situtation was different, I was older and they chances were greater I would tkae it.

yeah, that's what we're thinking.

thanks ladies!! i knew you all would have great advice!
Same here, except mine is scheduled for 3 weeks from now.
Ditto, and it is standard practice at my ob's office.
Just FYI, Down's is not hereditary--it's a chromosomal fluke.
I'm having one, not sure why or what I would do in the situation, I guess I'm having it to hopefully put any concerns at ease!
