help- rolling to belly in crib & then crying...

DS rolled front to back on T-giving weekend and did it several times that week. Since then, he got a helmet for his plagiocephaly & hasn't done it again (except once accdg to the sitter), although he still pushes up just as well as he used to, etc. He also used to nap great on his belly in our family room on a mat but has not so much since he got the helmet- just rubs his face into the mat & wriggles.

Today he figured out how to roll back to front in his crib but seems to have forgotten front to back. He rolls over & then smashes his face into the mattress & either puts his arms at his sides or up by his face but does not push up or roll over, just wriggles around like that, with face smooshed into the mattress until finally he gets frustrated and begins to cry & I turn him back over. I think that I have heard others talk about several nights to a week of this when they first learn to roll back to front...?

Questions:

1. When your LO did this, how long did it take for this frustration/crying to be over & they figured out how to go back & forth or just sleep on belly? I'm anticipating lack of sleep for us for at least a few nights...

2. Did you keep swaddling? we're too nervous to put him back in the miracle blanket and have him roll over with no arms to use to push up or move around, even though I don't know that he could actually roll while in it (he wasn't swaddled when he was rolling earlier). Again, thinking that sleeping tonight (and for at least a bit) is going to be rough without a swaddle.

Thanks...

  • Carter did this for like a week when he learned  how to roll to his belly.  It was very frustrating.  We would put him in his crib and he wold immediately roll to his stomach and hten whine .  It was like he couldn't figure out to go back which he had been dooing for months.  It was annoying but eventually he just stopped doing it and has since become a stomach sleeper!

  • We still swaddle for nights, and I put two rolled up blankets on each side of her.

She never rolls in her crib, I think that may be why...?
