Flying with ~6 month old - any advice?

We haven't been on any flights with C since he was 4 months old and I'm a little worried about keeping him entertained now that he has become more mobile.  He is pretty squirmy and wants to be moving around a lot more now.  Any ideas how to keep him happy?  Oh, and the other fun little tidbit is that he loves his 'screaming' voice.

  • Do everything you can to keep him AWAKE in the airport so that sleeping on the plane is more likely!  It's less stressful that way.

  • Does your DS like for you to read to him?  I know DD loves to just sit in our laps and read, and we took a few books to keep her occupied.  Also, DD just LOVES to look at pictures of herself.  My DH uploaded a ton of pics to his iTouch as another way to occupy her.

Also, planes are loud which I am sure you are aware.  I bet that will drown out your DS trying out his screaming voice.  Smile Good luck!

  • Hmmm...what about buying a bunch of ear plugs and mini bottles of vodka and passing them out to everyone sitting within 5 rows of you, saying "Merry Christmas!" Wink

Really, though, I've heard that having some "new" toys for him will keep him more entertained than his old standbys that he's used to. Good luck!

    Dear Bump: You suck.

No kidding, Jon and I keep free drink tickets in our bags to pass out to people around us if needed. Fortunately, it's never been needed.

  • Box of kleenex.  It's amazingly fun for little ones to pull them out sheet by sheet.  You can even restuff it and let them do it again.  It's well worth the $1 for 30-90 minutes of entertainment.

Post it notes.  Again, fun to tear off and stick to things.  I once stuck them to my bangs and moved my head back and forth to make them swing.  Got 15 minutes of giggles out of that (from son and fellow passengers).

Melissa and Doug makes hidden door puzzles where you open the doors and find magnetic pieces.  That is fun, but what is also fun is when mommy hides puffs/cheerios inside the doors and baby has to find them.  The puzzles are heavy for travel, but I found it worth it to take them along.

The barf bag and safety information packet in the backseat pocket are always winners.

This.  I used taffy's recs for our first flight with a mobile DC and they all worked wonderfully.

And the drink coupons- awesome idea.  I'm totally doing that from now on.

Seriously, we may have to do this!  Big Smile

I love all the ideas!  And naclh - the kleenex thing is brilliant!

Best advice ever! I almost wish there was a chance in hell I was ever getting on a plane with both of these kids, because I bet all of these ideas would work brilliantly. If DS liked pulling out kleenex as much as he likes pulling out wipes, we would be set for a flight to Australia ;)

  • FYI- for the Kleenex, we put it in a Lansinoh pump bag ziploc to make it easier to carry it on.  It has an opening just like the Kleenex box.
