Another white noise question?

Anyone not use a white noise machine? I started with the sleep sheep but then felt like it didn't make a difference. LO is still in our room but well be transitioning soon. After reading the other post I feel like I might be missing something but also don't want to over complicate. Should I start using white noise when we transition to his room?

Re: Another white noise question?

  • I use white noise wherever he sleeps at night: my room, his room, or living room. He has a lot of little sleep spots. I have a portable white noise machine that isn't too loud. Otherwise I use a radio tuned to static.

  • Never used white noise and I don't plan on it. My LO does just fine falling asleep in a quiet space. He will be transitioned into his nursery come next week and the only addition we made to the nursery was a night light (he tends to cry a lot more when it's pitch dark).

  • We use it because baby likes it, but more because it helps block out sibling noise when she's trying to rest. If your LO doesn't need it, no reason to use it!

  • LO does fine most nights sleeping with no noise but if some nights he's a little more "restless", I'll turn on the lullaby radio on my phone.
  • We don't use white noise.

  • I'd be so screwed without it.

This is us too. It's not part of our routine because I don't want him to need it to fall asleep.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • We don't use it. LO actually seems irritated by it rather than soothed.

  • For DD I have always used her sleep sheep. Since it only stays on for 45 minutes it is just on for while she is falling asleep and then it goes off for the rest of the night. Now at 20 months it is just part of her bedtime routine and if I forget to turn it on she asks me to. She doesn't need it but she likes it. She also has a gloworm that lights up and plays music that she's had since I stopped nursing her at bedtime at 12 months. She turns it on anytime she wakes up during the night to soothe herself back to sleep. She could sleep without it but she sleeps so much better with it!

DS seems to need more help with sleeping with all the noise the rest of us make so I've been playing a CD with waves and piano music in our room anytime he sleeps, I chose it just because it is something I can stand to listen to all night!
  • DS has used it since he was a baby to drown out the dogs barking, loud visitors, etc.  He doesnt NEED it but its nice to have on in the background. Sometimes I forget to turn it on and he sleeps just fine so I know he doesnt rely on it.  We are using it in our room for DD and will use it when we transition her.

@CaliforniaDream87how are you feeling about moving LO to his nursery? I haven't decided when I want to move LO into his own room.

I am feeling some anxiety. However, I really want to ensure he isn't dependent on sleeping with us (we have co-slept so far) and he begins to get comfy in his own room. We have the video monitors and have ensured his crib is nice and safe but I still feel sad. We will take it one day at a time. It is important for me to have him transitioned before I return back to work on 12/1.

  • We use it on and off and change the 'noise' every time. We don't want him used to any noise or lack of. He sleeps through most everything noise and silence.

  • I don' think you're missing anything, we just use white noise because it is just about the ONLY thing we can use to get LO to be sleepy.  The first few days we had him home, he didn't stop crying forever it felt like.  My sister-in-law introduced me to the hood vent over the stove, and he stopped crying!  Ever since then, that how we get him to calm down when he is raging mad. We use white noise by his RNP to keep him calm as well...
I'd say if your LO doesn't need it, I wouldn't introduce it to his sleeping IMO.

  • With DD1, I didn't use one until I thought it might help. If your LO seems fine without then don't use it!

I only use it when necessary, it helps during the day when she is figting naps but I don't use it every night. It saves my life in the car when she is screaming
  • Don't use it if you don't need it. It calms LO down and helps her fall asleep. I introduced it when she was 6ish weeks old and really fussy. It worked :)
  • We find it particularly helpful when he's tired but fighting sleep. He seems to "know" that the soothing sounds mean naptime/bedtime.
