Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how to get burps out?

My LO often cries when I burp him, and takes forever to get his burps out.

Any good solutions?  Or do you think it might be his formula?  He's on Nestle Good Start (orange one).

TIA

Re: how to get burps out?

  • Are you burping her too soon? Sometimes it will take forever for me to get a burp out when I try too soon. Also, change positions of the baby. Sometimes letting them stretch out will help promote the burp to come out.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I don't think so, I've tried at 1oz, 1.5 oz and sometimes 2oz.  Sometimes he has GREAT burps and other times he take forever and just screams :(  I try between my shoulder and sitting up on my knee, and no such luck.  Maybe it's just normal, but thought I'd ask.

  • Are you patting the back in the right spot?  I didn't realize that I wasn't patting him high enough at first.

Also, the position that works best for us is over the shoulder.  Sometimes I need to rub his back a little before patting.

  • Sometimes rubbing her back works for me when I'm having trouble.

  • We used to burp Colin by sitting him on our knee and holding his chin in our hands. (Looks better than it sounds) If we couldn't get a burp from him, we would bounce him just a little on our knee and that seemed to "work one lose" I guess you could say. Now he burps in any position.

  • Have you tried laying him on his belly over your lap?  Sometimes just the added pressure on his belly helps release the gas.  That's what worked for our DD when she had a particularly shy burp.
  • My DD would not burp either when she was drinking Good Start..she went from the orange one (Gentle Plus) to the green one (Protect Plus) now she is drinking the Similac Sensitive RS and it helps her burp and she is spitting up less.
