how exactly do they "eat" sausage/chicken/turkey, etc if they can't actually chew it? Do they just swallow the pieces whole? I saw a lot of people feed their LOs these things but I am afraid my son will swallow the pieces since he really can't gum things like this? or can he?
Re: stupid eating question: LO's without all their teeth...
DS has 7 teeth - 4 top and 3 bottom. For the chicken, he either gums it or pretty much just swallows it. I give him small enough (not tiny) pieces of usually rotisserie chicken that I pull apart - so it's kinda "shredded." It's super soft b/c of the the rotisserie style cooking. When we do meat - it's usually ground beef, so that's not a problem. We've done a few hot dogs (organic, nitrate/nitrite free) and I just take the skins off b/c they're hard and cut them into little cubes. He either gums/chews them or swallows them.
If the pieces aren't too big, then he shouldn't choke.
they gum it. they have pretty strong jaws. put your finger in there and try it. lol
DD was late on teeth - she was eating meat before she had any teeth at all. I just gave her little pieces (like the size of a pea, maybe a little larger) just in case she tried to swallow it hole.
They gum it.
I am very careful with meat though. It is the only thing I still make sure is cut into very small pieces.
their jaws are incredibly powerful and without teeth are totally capable of mashing the food up smaller.. He CAN gum them!
Ethan has eaten most everything we eat for about 8 months now and he just last week started getting his molars!
