should i buy anything preemie?

went to BRU today to get some stuff and DH thought we should buy a few preemie outfits just in case. i told him no way but am begining to second guess.... i am definitly having a csection so i'll have a few days before coming home, i could always send DH to go buy some if need be. how many of you were prepared just in case?

Re: should i buy anything preemie?

  • I bought one preemie outfit for each baby, but was never able to use them My girls were 4lbs 12oz each when they left the NICU and the preemie gown I bought wouldn't even cover their little feet or fit over their heads. LOL.

If you choose to, I would only buy one set at the most.

  • I have several preemie things that i got from freecycle. I'm thinking about buying nice coming home outfits in preemie size too. I'd leave the tags on and if we don't need them, we can return them. If we need them, it will be easier for my DH to wash them than to run out and buy clothes 9BRU is across town). Right now, my babies are in the 24th percentile and have to be delivered early. I'm thinking we may need them.
  • i got a few premie things at my shower. one of the boys wore one of the outfits home, it barely fit him. i agree, buy one maybe. they only go up to 5 lbs and if they are much smaller then that they will prob keep them in the nicu anyway. the newborn size was big, but the premie size was too small. we were in premie diapers for a while though cause those go up to 8 lbs.
  • i gave birth at 35 weeks and needed no preemie clothes. the NB was big but they grew into it fast. i wouldnt spend $$ on preemie clothing - at best, it will fit them for like a week.

  • We bought a few outfits, on the advice of friends whose full term daughters needed them for a week or so. Then when my BP went up and it became clear I was going to deliver early I bought a couple more, that ended up being huge on my girls. I delivered 37 weeks 3 days and my 4 lb 12 0z( who dropped to 4 lb 6oz) baby is teeny tiny and needs the preemie clothes. My other daughter was 6 lb 3 oz dropped to 5 lb 12 oz and can wear the bigger ones but is fine in newborns. You just never know!
  • I would get one thing!  I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have wanted DH going to pick out their "going-home" outfits without me.  He would have gotten something ugly.  Haha.

I wasn't prepared, but since my babies were still in the hospital when I finally left there, I had the chance to go pick up two little preemie outfits for each of them on the day we brought them home.  They won't fit for long though, they are each 4.5 lbs and the outfits fit them perfectly.  DD is actually a little snug in hers, lengthwise.

And I found out the the "newborn" sized Gerber Onesies are actually more like "Preemie" size.  Those won't last long either, as they fit the babies perfectly right now.

  • I bought 2 for each.  Luckily we needed bigger clothes and I was able to return them.
  • I bought them each 2 preemie outfits. Even though they were 7lbs 3oz and 5lbs 15oz they wore one of the preemie outfits home. It never fit them again. WalMart sells preemie sized clothes.
