3rd Trimester

Anyone not told to count kicks?

At my last Drs appt. 11/30 my Dr didn't mention kick counts.  We did the GD test and went over pre-registration for the L&D dept.

LO has her moments.  Sometimes she's quiet (like now) and sometimes she's non-stop (like yesterday).  I just found it odd that he didn't mention kick counts, and I didn't know about it until I got to the 3rd tri.

Re: Anyone not told to count kicks?

  • It might be a little early for you, they didn't tell me to start doing them until this last appointment...33 weeks, but its because I brought up that she hadn't moved much that morning. I've heard some docs tell you to do them after 28 weeks, some not until after 30. But if you think somethings up, it doesn't hurt to call and ask. They'll probably just then tell you do the kick counts and if its abnormal, then to call back.

  • My doctor's office never mentioned it with my first pg, or this pg.  They just ask me if I feel movement.

  • My midwife said it was more common to ask people to do years ago, but as long as you notice a fairly consistent pattern in kicks (more movement in morning vs evening, etc) there is no need unless you notice a decrease.

I haven't been asked to keep any counts at all and was only told just recently that they really only ask you to if you start to question a change in the consistency.

  • I've never been told to count the kicks.  The doc always asks if he's active and that's about it.  I wouldn't be too worried.  You know your body and the baby and would be able to tell if something is wrong regardless of counting.
  • I just instructions at my 32w appt.
  • Me... He said if I don't feel anything at all for an entire day to start worrying then, but don't drive myself crazy counting kicks.
  • I was told there was no need because every baby is different. I needed to get to know this baby and if I noticed anything super slow in a day for her then just lay down and try to feel 5 in a half hour.
  • It wasn't until like 32 or 34 weeks that my doc mentioned movement and she just said to note decreased movement. She's pretty mellow, which I like.

Many OBs won't have you do actual kick counts unless you have decreased movement.

  • My Dr. didn't talk about it ONCE!  At my 37 week appt the nurse gave me a paper that talked about "Welcome to your 3rd Trimester" Uh... 37 weeks?!  That paper talked about kick counts...

  • I was never told to do them. just to be mindful of her movements.

  • My doc said just to use my judgment -  I got to know his pattern and can tell if he is more or less active.  Her take it that counts are just anxiety inducing.

  • My doctor never mentioned it and I asked last time I was in.  She said they dont recommend it because it just freaks people out as the baby goes through sleep/wake cycles....and just like regular people some days they are just more active than other days.

She said if I dont notice movement for hours at a time, I should try to get him to move and if that fails then give them a call.

  • I asked my doctor about it and he said, "Usually by the time you've counted kicks and feel them decreased, it's too late to do anything for the baby."

I don't really care for him.  Fortunately all he is really in charge of is taking my BP and measuring my UTE.

If I notice decreased movement, I'll lay on my left side, drink something cold and count ten in an hour.

I've never NOT felt ten in an hour but if I did, i'd call Labor and Delivery.

  • My doctor just asks me if I have noticed any change in movement, never about told me to do kick counts. Her thinking is its just something else to stress out about. LO has a pretty predictable schedule. Some days are more active than other. I would be calling my doctor almost every day because there are times that LO is quiet for an hour or two,  we have done a couple NST and LO aced them. I just happen to have a mellow LO

  • My doctor said kick counting is not necessary.  He said if I go all day and then notice that I haven't felt LO move in a while, I should have a large, cold glass of juice and something to eat.  Then I should feel about 8 movements in an hour.  If I don't, I need to call.  If I do, we're good :)

  • At my appointments they ask if baby is still active but they have never mentioned to have me do kick counts so I don't.

  • LO is usually very active, but was complete opposite Wednesday.  I had an appointment that afternoon and mentioned it to my doctor.  He told me to do kick counts and to call back if I didn't get 8-10 in an hour or start to see his usual activity.  My point is, I don't think he would have mentioned kick counts if I didn't have a concern.

  • No talk of kick counts here. They just always ask if the baby is active.

  • My CNM gives us the kick count sheet around 30-32 weeks.  Even at 28 weeks, it's a little early if your LO decides to flip over and be facing funny to always count them.  Keep track of when she is usually active more than necessarily doing kick counts.
  • My doc has never mentioned kick counts to me before.  He just says if something doesn't feel right, use your brain and call.

  • My MW has never told me to do kick counts. She just says to pay attention to the baby's movements, and if there is a decrease to call her.
  • My docs have never said anything to me about it but I do pay close attention to movement. I remember when I was about 28 weeks or so and there would be a super mellow day and then a super active day. I would not worry.
