Just a heads up to everyone, check your medical bills VERY carefully! If you're like me, you're getting a lot of them between u/s's, blood work, etc., and they will only pile up. Well, fyi...
I got a bill for my 16 week u/s for over $300; $660 billed, and $300 as the balance after insurance. That seemed wrong so I investigated, calling the hospital (who told me insurance would only cover that much, the rest was co-payment and deductible) and then the insurance co.
From talking to the insurance co., I learned 2 important things. First, I was double billed on one u/s. Second, the hospital over charged me on that as well as the transvaginal (done to measure my cervix b/c I'm carrying twins). I called the hospital to tell them as much, and suddenly they were telling me they'd adjust the bills. I saved about $200.
The hospital can only charge you rates for procedures that are pre-negotiated and agreed to between them and the insurance carrier whose insurance they accept. So double check that your bills are both for procedures you really got, and call to verify that you're billed the right amt. by calling the insurance co. Through talking to others, I've found this is MUCH more common than I realized!
I hope that helps someone!
Re: On insurance coverage...
Great advice! I also want to add to look at your insurance explanation of benefits really carefully. Through that, I realized that one of the peris I saw was considered out of network (it was a group of like 10 docs and he was the only one out of network...probably his paperwork got lost somewhere). There were several other things that turned out wacky too (like not realizing my c-section stay was a maternity stay). Sometimes, the insurance company just resubmitted it through their system when I called. However, you can also appeal decisions too. I wound up writing a letter about the peri situation and they covered him as in-network. I also had a situation where the radiologist that read my DD's x-ray was out of network and I said I had absolutely no control who read them and they covered them as in-network.
Oh, and it takes forever for some of this stuff to filter through. I'm still getting EOBs now and my girls are almost a year old!
