Here is a quote from People online that kind of surprised me (namely that preeclampsia is rare). What do you all think?
"Michelle Duggar's 19th baby was born prematurely at 1 lb., 6 oz., because Michelle suffered a rare condition during pregnancy that causes high blood pressure, her doctor says.
The condition, preeclampsia, which affects 5 to 8 percent of
pregnancies, was discovered when Michelle was admitted to the
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to evaluate pain related to
a gall bladder problem"
Re: Is preeclampsia really rare? More Duggar thoughts...
Yes, according to statistics. Apparently some of us are just really lucky to be one of the few. Woo hoo.

I think that's one of those "define rare" things. HELLP syndrome is even more rare, and look how many of us had that, too.
Plus I think we're all jaded because we know each other!
My Blog
I guess that's rare...but then I think 5 or 8 people out of 100 ?! That sso way too many!
I guess IC is only 1%! Lucky me! doh!
Ijack, yeah apparently I'm lucky too on the abruption front. I do know from the 2 week check up my ob wasn't too optomistic about a future pregnancy. Says your risks for such wonderful things go up quite a bit after you've had them once. I'm just so thankful it wasn't my first pregnancy.
Why am I never on the small side of the odds for *good* stuff? The disease that caused my kidney failure is super rare; only about 5000 diagnoses EVER!
That AND pre-e? I'd rather win the lottery.
Interesting... if preeclampsia happens 5-8% of the time, it's more rare than prematurity. In our state a bit over 12% of babies are born premature.
Before having our kids I thought prematurity was very rare and only happened to a few unlucky people. I knew of preemies (my grandmother, my brother's BFF when he was a little guy), but they were few and far between.
That article must really be downplaying her and the baby's condition, since if her preeclampsia wasn't severe they would have tried to keep her on bed rest, right? I'm not sure, because my HELLP was very sudden, but when I had symptoms of pre-e, they said I would be on bed rest if I had it...
I think we may feel like it isn't rare because we are all so informed on the issue, but if you think about how many pregnant women exist, it's really a small fraction... I agree with Lemen though, it's still way too many!
