Any advice on weaning from breast to cow's milk?

My little baby boy just turned one!!!!!!!  Can't believe it!  So how does this work?  Do I give him milk at all now or do I do it only when I start weaning?  When I do start weaning (probably after the holidays) how does this work, he's solely on the breast now???  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!  I am living overseas right now and have some language barrier with the pedi's so I'm looking elsewhere for advice! Thanks!

Re: Any advice on weaning from breast to cow's milk?

  • i am still ebf but I have given hannah tiny bits of cow's milk to get her used to the flavor over the last 1-2 weeks. We are nowhere near weaning b/c she is still nursing 5x/day (would love to get down to 4 but it is not going well), and she doesn't like cow's milk.

I've heard to warm it up, and offer it to them at meal times. Wean them off non-sleeping times first, then wean off naps, and then bedtime. I can't speak from experience yet though, b/c like I said, it is not going well for us. HTH

  • PS you may have more help if you ask on the 12-24 month board b/c they have all been through it!

  • ah good to know and good point, guess I am graduating to that board! Didn't even think about that! :)
  • Here's what I did with DD:

I started giving her cold milk at lunch in a sippy (well I had daycare do it).  She was still getting 2 bottles of BM for morning 'snack' and afternoon 'snack'.  I then had them drop those as I weaned down to 1 sessions at work, then cut out pumping all together (still nursing at home as much as usual)

Then I started giving her milk at dinner and cut out the 'back from work' nursing session we had before dinner.  I kept the 2 nursing sessions...one in the morning, one at night before bed for several months.  But introducing milk in this way helped me wean from pumping at work, and I'd just nurse when I was home with her.
