Babies: 9 - 12 Months

So scared to start finger foods... tell me it's OK!

I want to give DD some finger foods to start with but I'm so freakin scared she's going to choke. I have a canister of puffs, but they seem really hard, and almost take too long to "melt". Is there anything that's easier to start with? Small pieces of banana, maybe? Should I get one of those little self-feeder things with the netting on it?

  • I was really scared too! DD would gag and had no interest in finger foods till 10 months. You'll know when they are ready!

We started with peas and DD loved them.

  • I don't know why people are so antsy to start puffs. pieces of banana are great, as are pieces of just about any soft veggie/fruit. I made baby pancakes using baby cereal and egg yolks and she ate little pieces of those.

edit: Peas, yes! She loves peas. I just pop them out of their skins first. She pretty much just swallows them whole though, as I later learned...

  • the mesh things are just messy to deal with, and clean. have you started/made food with a chunkier consistancy? Ive given C puffs for a week already, maybe like 5 a day one at a time......babies have an amazing gag reflex, gagging and choking are very different......try a puff and see what happens, if its too much then try again in a week.....usually they will spit out pieces they cant gum......

I bought them off the sugestion of another friend who swore by them. I tried one and it took WAY to long for me to just suck on it for it to dissolve. I won't give them to DD until I think she's more comfortable self-feeding. I think I'll try banana first. BTW, she HATES peas. I've tried them in the jars and making the myself; she wants nothing to do with them.

  • We just started with the puffs and yogurt melts. I was really nervous about starting them too. But, DD LOVES the yogurt melts.

Next I'm thinking about trying peas, pasta and maybe tiny pieces of cheese.

  • Just so you know, something like 25% of children who choke under the age of one are eating candy.  You should be fine with soft foods like canned peas, carrots, diced banana, ect.  Skip the listed hazards and she will figure it out.  My DD didn't eat much table food until she was well past a year, but DS eats rice, pasta, canned veggies, ect. and he is 8 months.  They all do it at their own pace, so just watch her and see.
