So, MIL called here asking about a gift to get DH for his bday. When we were getting off the phone she said "I love you" and I replied "You too."
For one, I have no clue why she said it...and two...It really made me feel awkward, bc I am not comfortable saying that to her. As I have posted numerous, numerous times, we do not get along....at all!! This is the same woman that ran into some friends of ours the night DD was born and sat there and talked bad about me.
Anyhow......less than 5 mins after we get off the phone FIL calls and asks why I was so mean to MIL on the phone. I was told it was very rude of me to say "you too" instead of "I love you too."
Why should I be forced to love a person? We truthfully do NOT get a long...period. DH and my Dad are very close, and I would never expect DH to tell him he loves my Dad.
Re: Is it wrong that I want to smack my MIL?
Oh my...she needs to get a grip! It's silly that the comment even bothered her, but for her to have FIL call you on it is unfuckingbelievable! I don't know that I would've been able to keep my calm on the phone with him.
Yeah, IL's say "i love you" and it does make me uncomfortable, but it is sweet that they care so much and feel comfortable sayingit to me. So when I can't say it back, I kind of view it as my problem, not theirs. I always say "we love you, too.." somehow that seems less akward??
FIL should not have called you back. No good can come of that. That's just stirring the pot. I totally would have said "I'm sorry, but it makes me uncomfotable.." just be honest...
It is like H.S. with them two. MIL works for DH (which is another p.i.t.a!!) If they ever get in to work debate..at work mind you...MIL goes home and tells FIL that Dh was so mean to her. And you bet your bottom dollar FIL is calling telling DH he needs to apologize. Don't they make a little blue pill or something that MIL can take!!! lol
