Any tips for keeping supply up once you go back to work?

I never get quite as much pumping as I do when the babies are nursing.  I'm worried that I'm going to start having an ever-diminishing supply once I'm back at work and pumping three times a day.  We're also already using some of the stash milk to mix with rice cereal and other solids, so that's not helping.  I go back to work in January.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to keep my supply up so I can keep breastfeeding for six more months?  I really want to make it to a year.

  • I use water to mix cereal, so that helps.

I find eating protein right before I pump (so a handful of nuts, some cheese, etc) and drinking a lot  of water all day are the most important things I do.

  • For me the key was eating and drinking enough.  I saw a noticeable difference in my output on the days I snacked all day - the hard part was finding healthy snacks!  Also make it a priority to just nurse, nurse, nurse on the weekends.

  • You will get more while pumping at work b/c LO won't be feeding.  That is what has been told to me and to not worry about trying to get a big supply right now.
  • Here's what helps me:

Eating a snack when I pump

Drinking 8 oz of water before pumping and another 16 while pumping

Pump for the amt of time LO usually eats (for me its 15 mins) and pump as often as your LO eats (for me it's every 3 hours)

If you don't have time to pump the full time, at least pump as long as you can, some stimulation is better than none

Do breast massage while I'm pumping.

Think of milk flowing the entire time and think of your LO

Look at pics of your LO

Put my feet up while I pump to help me relax

It seems like if I'm distracted and not focusing, I get less out. It's a lot of your mind. Try not to stress out about it either. More stress= less milk. Good luck to you and congrats for making it 6 months already!! I'm just past the 4 month mark and have been back at work full time since DD was 12 weeks.
