So I'm checking out the www.sittercity.com website to check for sitters in my area, since we have no friends or family who live close enough to babysit for a Friday or Saturday night kind of thing. The rates for sitters on this site is like $10-$20? Granted these are typically women 18+ who have had experience with children, work at daycare centers during the day, etc. I would feel better about leaving my 6 month old with an experienced person, but $10 an hour? Man, I remember when I got a $1 an hour babysitting and was happy about it.
What do you all pay for your sitters who are not family or friends and how old are they?
Re: S/O - Babysitters who aren't family - how much do you pay?
I made $10/hour when I was in high school 89-93...
I pay $15-17/hour for 2.

I use a college student and pay $12/hr for LO.
But that's not the main reason why I responded to this post...
PLEASE USE CAUTION when using sites like sitter city! My sister followed all the right steps when hiring someone off of that site - interviewed her outside of the home first, followed up with all references before she had her meet her children/husband. I know the site says they do a background check but I have to wonder how thouroughly - my sister ended up with a crazy woman - thankfully she got rid of her before anything bad happened but it actually went so far as having to go to the police for protection. Just wanted to give you a heads up. I'm sure there are many good sitters listed - just be careful!
I asked my niece, a seasoned babysitter, what the going rate is around here. She said $5 is good, $7 is better, $10 is great, $15 and they'll never leave you.
We pay $10/hr.
Thanks for the info.
