S/O - Babysitters who aren't family - how much do you pay?

So I'm checking out the www.sittercity.com website to check for sitters in my area, since we have no friends or family who live close enough to babysit for a Friday or Saturday night kind of thing.  The rates for sitters on this site is like $10-$20?  Granted these are typically women 18+ who have had experience with children, work at daycare centers during the day, etc.  I would feel better about leaving my 6 month old with an experienced person, but $10 an hour?  Man, I remember when I got a $1 an hour babysitting and was happy about it.

What do you all pay for your sitters who are not family or friends and how old are they?

  • I live in a small town and people pay cheap. I only pay 20 a day for DC but when I get a sitter on a Friday or Sat I always pay at least 20 dollars min. for the night so mostly around 5-10 an hour. We havn't been out more then 2-3 hours for dinnner.

  • I pay a sitter (family friend) 100 for a 4 day wek...so 25/day.
  • I made $10/hour when I was in high school 89-93...

    I pay $15-17/hour for 2.

  • We pay our sitter 125 a week or 30 a day. If we have a sitter at night (which is rare, I think we did one time) we paid her 30. She was also my SIL though! She had him for about 2 hours. I guess I would normally pay about 30 for an evening.

  • It depends a lot on where you live.  We pay $10-12 for a high school kid when the kids are both asleep, $15-17 for an older (college, nanny, etc) sitter and/or the kids are awake.
  • $15/ hour

  • I use a college student and pay $12/hr for LO.

But that's not the main reason why I responded to this post...

PLEASE USE CAUTION when using sites like sitter city!  My sister followed all the right steps when hiring someone off of that site - interviewed her outside of the home first, followed up with all references before she had her meet her children/husband.  I know the site says they do a background check but I have to wonder how thouroughly - my sister ended up with a crazy woman - thankfully she got rid of her before anything bad happened but it actually went so far as having to go to the police for protection.  Just wanted to give you a heads up.  I'm sure there are many good sitters listed - just be careful!

  • I asked my niece, a seasoned babysitter, what the going rate is around here.  She said $5 is good, $7 is better, $10 is great, $15 and they'll never leave you.

    We pay $10/hr.

    Thanks for the info.

  • We used SitterCity.com and found a really great sitter for the occassional night we go out and we pay her $12/hr. You're right - most of the sitters were between $10-15 and the ones who were less didn't have the experience. IMO it's worth it to us to pay the extra $10 a night to get someone who's really qualified and we're comfortable with. But again, we only use her maybe 1-2x a month. I had originally thought $10-15 was high as well but then I asked our neighbors and that's typically what they pay as well.
