Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Just started solid foods-is it normal for poops to become solid too?

I think my daughter is constipated. It's very formed and she has to grunt it out. I know it comes with the territory of starting solids but what should I be expecting? Also, what could be the offender? Her diet includes breastmilk, bananas, oatmeal and squash. TIA

  • Yes, it is very normal. Cut back on the bananas as they are very constipating. Try some pears, and give her a little bit of water with meals.

  • As they eat more solids, it does get more formed. As long as it's not really compact with lots of cracks in it...you're fine.

Oh I forgot to mention we do give he some water with meals but she probably drinks leas than half an ounce perday.  I never realized bananas were constipating! Ok TMI question too- her poops have little specks in them that look like what a banana looks like after it has been out in the air for a while- you know the little fibers. Is that normal after eating bananas?

GI doc said yesterday that we want them to be "pasty but not formed".  If they're formed (and they are about half the time for D), she said to add more fruit and less veggies/cereal.  (Cereal is definitely NOT our culprit as she hates it lol).  Bananas can be constipating, though.
    Good info, thanks!
