Don't know how best to say it in English. In Spanish we say "mal de ojo" which basically means giving babies the "evil eye" out of jealousy. A lot of Hispanics swear by this. In DR and PR they normally give babies a "sabache" which is a small charm bracelet that has been blessed to keep the "evil eye" at bay.
Anyway, like I said its common amongst Hispanics but wondering if any other cultures also believe in this.
Re: Do you believe people can give you the "evil eye"?
For me the evil eye = the side eye.
Oh, and no. I have never heard of this.
Everyone should have a little evil bride in their stocking this Christmas.
Yes, DH is Indian. Indians sometime put a dot of Kohl (like black eyeliner made out of a powder) behind a babies ear to protect it from 'buri nazar', or the evil eye. They also line their babies eyes with kohl to protect them from the sun and to keep them cool.
At my wedding they placed a dot of kohl behind my right ear to protect me from jealous evil eye stares.
DH has a ton of baby pictures of him wearing the kohl eyeliner and it is pretty funny.
Proud mama to a boys- 6/17/09 - a girl 2/23/11- and a boy 8/20/12
That's probably the correct way of saying it lol
Me either.
I have a lot of Hispanic friends so I respect it. It's better to respect beliefs than to dismiss them.
