stolen from 0-3: room vs nursery during labor stay.

not that anyone will know what the situation is when your actually in it, so your thoughts may change...but

what are your thoughts on LO staying in the room vs the nursery during your hospital stay?

just curious.

Re: stolen from 0-3: room vs nursery during labor stay.

  • As excited as I am for LO to get here and to be able to spend time with him and get to know him, I fully intend to use my time in the hospital for recovery.  This means, at nights I'm going to try to get as much sleep as I can and LO will be hanging out in the nursery.

  • I kept my baby in my room during the day.  DH or my mom or some other visitor was pretty much always there to help out if I needed anything.  At night, I sent her to the nursery so I could sleep and it was one of the best decisions I made!  They still brought her in to nurse and I would wake up and feed her and then push the call button and tell them she was ready to go back to the nursery.  I desperately needed that little bit of sleep!

  • Totally in the room. I will not let her leave my side for long.
Baby number two! Coming soon! June 8th.
  • Haven't really thought about it too much. I'll prob sent him down to the nursery so I can get some sleep. If that's at all possiable. But ya never ya....

my sil was DEAD SET that she would have her lo stay in the room with her....she ended up in the nursery.

  • Because I will be BF I would love to have him in the room majority of the time. I would also love about 10% of the time in the nursery, so I have time to recover before we go home. DH will be there and may take him most of the time.
  • LO will stay in the room with me as much as possible. The only time she'll go to the nursery is when I'm needing a shower and DH doesn't happen to be in the room (or someone else that I trust to take care of her).

I fully believe that you should start from the very beginning taking as much care as possible of your LO...it'll get you into practice more quickly. The hospital where DH and I will have LO maintains the "have the baby in your room as much as possible" frame of mind and I've thought it was wonderful from the first time I heard it (when I worked there). I thought it was especially great when we went on our tour of the facilities and there were NO babies in the nursery when we went by. Of course, it stunk not being able to see all the cute babies...but it's still good to know that all of the parents in the hospital were truly taking an active role in learning how to take care of their babies from the very beginning. Big Smile

  • get sleep while in the hospital.  Even if they don't have the 'nursery' let the nurses take the baby for a bit and get a good 3-4 hour chunk of sleep while you have 'help'.

We kept both kids with us the first night since they'll eat more. The 2nd day they are 'sleepier' so we sent them to the nursery and just had them brought back for feedings. Everyone will say it's best to learn their 'eating' cues, but a good night of sleep will do you a world of good.  We did fine doing this.

  • My hospital's policy is to practice rooming in unless otherwise requested. I hope to room with LO during the whole stay.  My hospital is super pro-BFing, so I'm sure this is their reason, and I want to EBF, so it seems like  a good idea to me!

  • Well we would want LO with us regardless, But our hospital does everything "In room" we have no option for them to take LO because they have no nursery. They do everything bed side Mom. It's a new thing they do, the only reason they take LO away is if he is getting circumcised. Then they bring him right back!
  • We had DS stay in the nursery at night and plan to do the same for DD.  It's our last chance to get as much sleep and recovery as we can.  They brought DS in whenever he was awake/hungry/etc.

  • most hospitals anymore actually prefer you to have your baby room in.   although mine would take baby if i really wanted them to so i could sleep-but guess what if baby gets hungry and your are pumping or breast feeding baby comes back :)  so every 2-3 hours anyway!
  • I love our hospital - they don't even have a nursery, so we'll be rooming-in.
  • our OB, pedi and the doula who taught our birth classes all recommend rooming in so we can learn the baby's body language regarding feeding, dirty diapers, etc so we're going to try that for as long as we can tolerate it. If we get too exhausted, we fully intend to send LO to the nursery though.
  • our hospital encourages rooming in. They really don't even have a nursery any more. They just take the babies to the nurses station if we really can't deal. So I guess we are having the baby in the room while we are there.

  • My hospital has a room-in policy, unless mom specifically requests a break or if LO needs to go to the NICU.

  • I didn't sent DD to the nursery and don't plan to with this LO either.  I had plenty of help if needed in the room.
  • hospital i am delivering at doesn't have a nursery, so that makes that decision easy!

  • At first I thought I wanted her to room with me, and we are planning to breast feed so she may have to anyway (since I will get woken up to feed her).

But we will see. After the hospital tour the nurse was very convincing about letting LO spend the night in the nursery haha

  • Everyone had told me to let him stay in the nursery so I can get sleep but our hospital policy is that baby stays with mom. I think if you really can't get rest they'll take the baby away for a few hours so I hope to take advantage of that. I am breastfeeding so see why he would need to stay with me but I also know I'll be exhausted.

  • why dont some of your hospitals have a nursery?

    just curious..

  • Rooming in because I don't trust the hospital to follow wishes on paci's and formula.  My wishes were ignored last time.  I don't want to come home with a new baby to a cranky toddler even more irritated.
  • I prefer to room-in.
  • I had my babies all day and then when I wanted a few hours sleep, the nurses loved to take them and cuddle while I slept.  My H didn't stay at the hospital at night, it was too uncomfortable.
  • No nursery if it can be helped. I do not think it is a good idea for my first night with LO to be alone at home. I would much rather have the assistance of the nursing staff to get me through the first nights.
  • Also, our hospital won't let you be alone with the baby if you're on any narcotic pain meds ( I wasn't) and they don't want you to keep your baby in the room if there is not an adult in there who is awake, for security reasons, even though they do use the braclet alarm system thing.

  • I will room in with my baby (unless NICU time is required).  No question.
  • DD1 roomed in with us and so will DD2.  We were able to sleep just fine.  There is no nusery where I will give birth unless your baby is sick.

I think it's important that the child is with the mother after birth but that's just MO.

  • My hospital has it set up where LO will stay in the room; however, there is a nursery. So, if I feel like I really need to get some sleep- I will put her in the nursery, but other than that- she will stay with me.

  • The hospital where we are delivering has a nursery but it is for procedures not for the babies to hang out. The nurses will take LO to the nurses station if we need a break but she will be with us most of the time.

  • In-room. I wouldn't want it any other way. Those first days are precious! DD was in the room with me and I hated when they had to take her for testing, etc.

  • With my first child, I didn't have any doubts that I would keep him in my room the entire time.  My husband was able to stay the entire time too, so he was able to help, and everything went well.  Honestly, I can't imagine my baby being in the nursery without me.  I plan to do the same thing this time.

This is what we plan on doing.  I figure it is the only time that a nursery with fully competent staff is going to be available to me - I better take advantage!  Plus, that way I'll go home more rested and (perhaps) more prepared to take care of the baby 24/7.

  • Our hospital doesn't even have a nursery. I was so surprised when they told us during the tour. We want LO to stay in the room with us, but it's interesting anyway.
  • I like the idea of him being in the room during the day and in nursery at night.  I know I will wake up at any little sound he makes and that will just not be a good situation for me if I want to be functional.

  • DD was sent to the nursery at night and was with me during the day. I didn't send her until midnight though. With LO I will be BFing this time so I will send him and have him brought back for feedings at night only.
  • nursery at night no question, but with us during the day.   Those first days at home are trying enough, I plan on getting all the rest I can
  • I'm undecided. It depends on how I'm feeling after delivery.

  • Rooming in. At least thats what I say now. I figure we'll be freaked enough our first night home with Jude that I think I'd like to do a trial run when we have all the staff to ask questions and stuff.
