Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Did baby leave your room while at the hospital?

Now I'm curious after reading someone else's post. At my hospital, everyone came to the baby if anything needed doing. All his tests and even his jaundice light box were brought to our room- he never left my room for anything.

Is this not a normal thing? I would have been very unhappy if anyone had taken my baby out of my room. My hospital isn't even equipped with a nursery except for the NICU but I wouldn't have wanted one anyway.

  • DD was taken out to be checked-out by the pedi a few times & to have blood drawn.  Bili lights were brought to my room tho & she had to be under them at all times unless feeding.  I didn't stress them taking her out...each time was to go down to the nursery to have something done.

  • Unfortunatley my LO did sleep in the nursery the first 2 nights, I had an adverse reaction to the spinal and almost ended up in a coma so I could not care for him.  I went in thinking he would never leave my room but...he is fine and hasn't left my sight since.
  • ours had to stay in the room with us, They took her out to draw blood though. But everything else was done in the room with us.

But our hospital  had no nursery to take her too either

  • Yes they took her from my room a few times. When I was in labor I developed a fever so they put an IV in her ankle and gave her antibiotics. Everytime they had to switch her bags they'd take her and they also took her to do a little bit of bloodwork. There was one time where I had to page the desk twice before they finally brought her to me. Talk about one peeved momma!
  • DS never left the room either.  All tests and blood work were done in the room.  Our hospital also doesn't have a nursery.

  • My DD was taken to the nursery at every shift change.  7am and 7pm.  She was usually brought right back, but one evening they had her for almost 2 and half hours.  I was down there waiting and they got her right out when we started asking for her.
  • I thought I was going to be anal about it, but I wasn't. Her ped checks were all in the room but we did have her sleep in the nursery the second night. After being up for about 30 hours, DH and I were both insanely tired. They brought her to me whenever she would wake up hungry and we both felt well rested heading home which was nice.

  • I think that's normal. Hospitals are really pushing romming in and I think it's great. Unfortunately my baby was sent straight to the nicu and I was being watched for seizures so I didn't get to meet her for 24 hours :(
  • No, he went to the nursery each night per our choice.  All pedi checks were done in the nursery, as was his circ. and baths.

The hearing test, billirubin tests, etc were done in the room with us.

  • DS was in the nicu briefly and then meeded antibiotics so was out of my room a bunch and stayed in the hospital after I was released

    this.

Plus being alone after a c-section, I admit I sent her to the nursery the first morning so I could finally sleep a little. I would also take a shower while the pedi was checking her out in the nursery.

  • All the tests were done in our room (hearing, jaundice, pedi checkups)

He was taken out (my husband went with him) after he was born because he had a slight fever and they had to take him to the nursery for a little wihle (less than 2 hours).

  • I sent him to the nursery at night and all of his tests and circ were done in the nursery as well.

He was born at 10:30pm and there would have been NO WAY I would have been able to get out of bed and get him when he needed me.  I was so exhausted I couldn't even sit up, much less get out of bed and pick up the baby.  Plus the epi took forever to wear off and I couldn't walk...when they made me get up to go to the bathroom, two nurses had to come and stand on either side of me to support me to get me into the bathroom.

Plus, DH didn't stay at the hospital.  The sleeping arrangements were not comfortable at all and he got no rest the night before at the hospital and we didn't see the point in both of us being completely exhausted with a newborn.

This.  They brought him in to nurse but I knew I'd be on my own when we got home and wanted to rest.  He still spent 80% of his time in my room b/c the kiddo loves to eat!

  • The pedi came to our room and the blood draw was done in our room. The only time she left was for her first bath down in the nursery and we went with and then for her hearing test.
  • He only left the room when I asked them to take him
  • Yes, she slept in the nursery each night from midnight until about 7 the next morning.  It was the best advice my friends have given me! I thought it really helped my recovery, as I felt rested each day (I had a c-section and was in the hosptial for 4 days).
  • LO was taken out the night before we went home to have some state tests done, she was only gone for 2 hours or so.
  • The first night he was taken to the nursery as per my request.  I had been awake since I arrived at the hospital at about 11pm the night before so I was a wreck and really needed some rest.  He also left for testing the next day, but was brought back shortly after.

  • My hospital doesn't have a nursery, but they did take him out to do his circ and bloodwork. His hearing test, billiruben, and pedi checks were all done in my room. Whenever they took him out he was brought right back a few minutes later. He was just in the room right next door and I could hear everything they were doing so it wasn't a big deal to me.

  • She was taken out for pedi checks and billi and blood sugar tests. The hearing test was done in my room, and she stayed with me the rest of the time. I did ask them to keep her at 3 in the morning the last night until she was ready to nurse so I could get some sleep, but people kept coming in and out of my room to poke/prod me, so I couldn't sleep anyways. I told them to go ahead and bring her back.

  • Most things were done right in the room with me, but they took her for a shot, ECCO, and some check ups. Also, my DH had the nurse take her when he had to tell me that our puppy passed away :(

  • My LO was in the NICU from the night she was born (Tuesday) until Friday morning. We went to see her, but she wasn't in my room until Friday morning. I was totally 100% okay with that; not just because obviously I wanted her to be taken care of in the NICU, but also because I think I would have felt extreeeeemely overwhelmed if I was left alone with my baby on the first day. Just how I felt.

  • DS never left our room.  He would of if we had him circumsized, but we deceided not to.  That is the only reason that they take the babies from the rooms at our hospital unless something is wrong.

  • Yes. He was taken out for his first bath, and also for his circumcision. We were only in the hospital one night, but he slept in the nursery. I was in labor overnight, and didn't sleep at all that day after he was born, so I was absolutely exhausted.

This, minus the circ since Claire was born without a peen!

Same here.  (Obviously no circ though).

I was up since 4:30am the day before my c-section, and combined with meds, I couldn't even keep my eyes open.  I felt quilty for sending her to the nursery at night (at first) but it was the best decision for us.  She had someone to watch her continuously and it wasn't like I could jump out of bed if I needed to.  When it was daytime, she was in my room constantly, unless I wanted to shower and no one was there.  I would wheel her back for an hour and then go get her when I was finished.

  • Just for her bloodwork- aside from that, she was with us the whole time.
  • My DD didn't leave the room for anything, everything was brought to us. Although they did have a nursery and she could have gone there during the night if we wanted. But I was breastfeeding so we kept her with us the entire time and I loved it :)
