Buying things before baby shower?

What baby things, if any are you buying before having a baby shower? I'm trying to budget and planning on maybe buying bigger things (stroller, car seat) before the shower, thinking that gifts will probably be more clothes and toys rather than practical things.

    We bought the stroller and the nursery furniture. Thats it so far.

    I have bought a few things, stroller/car seat(it was expensive so I didnt want someone else to buy it),  bedding, nursing covers(got them for free), angel care monitor(got it used for $60), I will also be buying our cloth diapers.  If I see a sale on something I will most likely buy it.

    I am buying anything I think is "vital" just in case. That way I can relax at the shower and enjoy the gifts I do get knowing that I have everything I need for LO's first few months of life.

    Diapers and wipes. I have heard you can never have enough of those, and I would rather try to asorbe some of the cost now then all at once.

    My mother bought us the furniture. MIL bought the glider and bedding. Sister bought the high chair. My father is getting the travel system. We have been very lucky!

    DH has been extremely adamant that we not purchase much before the shower. But, we did get the glider/ottoman and a gate/corral thing on sale on Black Friday, also a few clothes and some blankets (on sale as well). I believe that my mom is purchasing the stroller today so that we can have it at the shower.

    FYI: My mom always buys a baby matress for mom to be and I ALWAYS get the mom a maternity nightgown that she can wear during the hospital stay. Nothing like all the pictures in those horrible hospital gowns

    The only thing we have bought so far is the nursery furniture. We put all the big things on the registery and got most of them. And if we wouldn't have gotten them I would have wanted to use the completion coupon discount on them. Why not wait, see what you get and go from there.

    I like this approach-I feel like I appreciate practical gifts but at the same time it's my and dh's responsibility to provide the necessities and things like special blankets and stuffed animals (not too many!) given my loved ones are nice keepsakes whereas the bottles will be gone in a year.

    We bought the furniture and I've been picking up clothes here and there.  My mom got our bedding but that's actually an early shower gift.

    We bought the safety items for the house ( outlet covers stuff like that) and my in laws will be purchasing the crib.  As far as your big items go.. id put them on there... #1- when i go to a shower for a friend.. we all usually like to pitch in to get her one of her bigger items... #2- you get the discount if its on your registry. 

     

    I say put them on there and see what happens!

    We bought the carseat because it was a great deal when we got it, and MIL bought us the crib. So far that's all we have!

    We are planning to buy the following ourselves: crib, dresser, glider, carseat, cloth diapers.  We are getting the BOB stroller for Christmas as a generous gift from my mother.  We don't want to put anything too expensive on the registry.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

    We've gotten Bertini Travel Sytem, new  lovely Baby Trend playard  deluxe 6 in1 Close n Cozy with a lovely bassinet you can take anywhere you go, some diapers and wipes onsale from BRU, bouncer and anything we see on sale which will not be on sale next year. Apparently dec/jan baby stiff usually on big sale. Crib would be early next year. And d rest people would purchase for us.

    We bought the nursery furniture and decor, plus a few Carters outfits in various sizes that we found on sale (paid about $3 to $5 each).  The rest we put on the registries.
