Rice cereal at 1.5 months?

I know I have posted about my friend who had her first baby... like how she didn't feel like dealing with her baby and so he was crying and she put him in the car and just let him cry for 40 minutes (sorry, it still makes me cringe, I don't think she actually tried to get him to stop crying first).

Anyway she says she is going to try rice cereal today - her baby is only 1.5 months old.. what do you think about this?  I'm not trying to be controversial or anything, just wondering what you guys think.  Her reasoning is, she didn't even try to breastfeed, and she doesn't like his sleep schedule, she is trying to get him to drop feedings and get on a daycare schedule now.

Re: Rice cereal at 1.5 months?

  • Where is she getting her advice from - or is she just making everything up? I mean, I didn't know how to take care of a baby 24-7....but you READ about it....and ASK others about it.

Unfortunately I feel like a ton of people give their baby cereal to try and get them to sleep longer. BUT it always seems to backfire and just cause the baby to be even more cranky because their bodies can't handle the food. Poor baby!

  • Exactly what Telyco said- their bodies can't handle it!

We gave it to Justin around 8 wks in a bottle b/c of pressure from MIL and GMIL. He was doubled over, grunting and crying. We could feel his little tummy grumbling from the outside. It was just awful, that was when I learned I needed to listen to my own gut.

  • That all makes me so sad...  She needs to catch up with the times and listen to what the experts say instead of wives tales.  Sounds like she iis getting her advice from my MIL, she claims the pedi told her not to console her colicky newborn and to just shut him in a room if it got too much to listen to.  That is what she did, he once cried for 16 hours straight without stopping.  I can't even begin to tell you how screwed up he is now.  And the food too.  MIL started all her kids on cereal by 2 weeks and fruit by a month old to help them sleep, get on a schedule and take less formula/breast milk (because she believed breast milk wasn't  enouph).  Now all 4 kids have gut problems, 2 can't eat dairy products at all!
  • My sister did it with my youngest neice that early.. and I know a lot of other people who have too.. I really think people will think it will help them sleep.. but there is NO evidence that it works, and also, logically, why would it? It has less calories per ounce.. I mean I guess in the long run the kids are fine.. but I was really opposed to it. I didn't give Eve anything buy BM until she was 6 months..

  • When we were having all of the nursing/weight loss issues, and Evan was spitting up and vomiting, the ped. suggested that we try to add 1 tbsp. of rice cereal to a 4 oz. bottle of breastmilk, solely to thicken it to see if he would keep it down/take it slower.  We tried this twice and both times he vomited up the whole (or close to whole) bottle.
