Help! I have developed an itchy rash, postpartum itch anyone?

It has started about 3 weeks ago and has progressively gotten worse. It is bad at night and it changes each night on my body...some nights it is my feet, forearms, hips, legs....I called my doctor and she recommended going to derm...so I am waiting to hear back. I noticed that it gets really bad after I pump....wonder if it has something to do with that? It's driving me nuts though! I had a c-section back in Sept.I am interested in hearing if anyone else has experienced this or is experiencing this! Thanks!

Re: Help! I have developed an itchy rash, postpartum itch anyone?

  • Hey- I developed a horrible rash 2 weeks PP. It had hives and red bumps, worse at night, and UNBEARABLY itchy! I tried benadryl cream, hydrocortisone cream, aveno lotion, and sarna lotion with little relief. I waited about 8 days and finally went to my PCP who referred me to dermatology the same day. They attributed it to a rash typical of 3rd trimester but sometimes appears post partum.  Due to breast feeding, all oral meds for itching were not an option due to decrease supply and sleepiness.  They gave me a prescription for a cream with a higher steroid than I was using over the counter. After about 3-4 days it dissipated. It's been a few weeks now and I still get itchy from time to time, no rash though. The thing that really helps now is the sarna lotion. Have you tried that?? Also, for me it helped to avoid getting too hot, like taking more luke warm showers.

Good luck. I feel for you!

  • I had the same problem, the derm prescribed something but that didn't work then the nurse practitioner prescribed nystatin and after a week it got so much better and I also changed soap, body wash to dove free of dyes-scent etc. also cetaphil lotion worked great. I still get itchy sometimes and I just put cetaphil and it goes away.

  • I had the exact same thing, but didn't see a doctor about it. I already use a cortisone (sp?) cream called Lyderm, so that helped a nice bit for the itching, but nothing made it completely better. My legs were the worst and I honestly thought it was due to my PP stretch marks.
