3rd Trimester

Nervous about my 36 week check up!

So... this is my 1st baby and I'm on my 35th week of pregnancy. I had an apointment last week and everything looks normal, so everithing was going good for me until my ob/gyn said "next time you come I will have to check you down there." I was like "ok" then he said "it hurts" so now im freaking out! He really made me feel uncomfortable. So now I'm all nervous about the vaginal check up. I know it wont hurt as much as giving birth but seriously his "it hurts" comment was totally NOT necessary!  I have my 36 week apointment next week, I will make sure my husband comes along but what can I do to make myself relax!!!??

  • I would appreciate the warning, so that you're not blindsided.  I found it painful, but it's very quick.  My doctor said I didn't have to have them every time either if I wanted to opt out of them every other week.

I personally did not find it in the least bit painful - I did bleed afterwards, though. It wasn't a big deal and when I called my doc she said it was normal, but just to give you a heads up!

  • cervical checks didn't hurt me AT ALL until I was in labor.

it will be 100x worse if you get yourself all worked up.

Cervical checks don't hurt me at all.  It's a bit of pressure feeling, but not even as bad as an annual exam in my opinion.  I don't know why he decided to freak you out.  Anticipating pain can make it painful.  Remind yourself that he's a jerk and it's no big deal.

  • I don't remember them being painful at all with my first pregnancy (stripping the membranes was but not cervical checks), however I had my first one yesterday with this pregnancy and it was definitely uncomfortable. It was over pretty quick though.

  • I had one a few weeks ago in triage, and for me it was painful. With that said, I'm sure some people are more gentle than others, plus people have different pain tolerances.

If it really makes you uncomfortable, you can decline the cervical checks.

  • I agree w/ others that it's no where near as painful as annual exams. And it's super quick. I didn't even have any bleeding or cramping afterwards.

I didn't find my check any more uncomfy than a pap or having my IUD placed (Imaybe I have a cervix of steel I dunno) but I barely noticed it to be honest. I mean if you are usually sensitive down there it might hurt a bit but I really wouldn't worry about it, being tense isn't going to help, just think it'll be over in like 20 secs and it really isn't that bad.
