2nd Trimester

Ok, ok, I know this is a first tri ?

It's the good old hair dye question. I never paid attention to these questions in first tri, b/c I didn't plan on dyeing my hair. Well, now I have quite a number of unsightly grays and some holiday parties coming up, and I would like to have my hair done before them. I didn't even think twice about this and scheduled an appt, but I said something about it at a family dinner the other day and my sister, mom, and grandma all freaked out and told me I shouldn't be dyeing my hair.

Really, what is the worry about this? The chemicals? None of my family could articulate WHY I shouldn't dye my hair...I just shouldn't. Anyway, I go to an Aveda salon and their hair dye is largely natural, but it is all-over color, not just highlights, and it sits on my head for a solid 30 minutes. Sorry to bore you all with a redundant question, but I would like some reassurance that I'm not being an evil mom if possible. Thanks.

  • My doctor said it was fine for me to color my hair and I use a box at home. I have colored my hair once so far and plan on doing it again this weekend.

  • Dying your hair (all-over and highlights) is totally FINE. That is an old-school myth and there are no studies that validate it.

Dye your hair if you want.

  • Ditto what others said. I'm looking forward to getting my hair dyed today! :)

  • My doctor said it is perfectly safe to dye your hair. Too bad I'm allergic to hair dye. :-(

  • I asked my doctor about this a few weeks ago when I was having a major root issue. She said it's perfectly fine and that the worst case scenario would be the color not coming out right, but definitely no harm to the baby. I just used a cheap at-home box, and it came out fine. I put a fan in the bathroom because of the smell, but I don't think you have to.

How did you know you were allergic...I know this is off-topic, but I've had some freaky reactions to it, and was wondering if I was but not sure how you would even know that....

  • I dyed my hair at 14 weeks...me and my baby are still ok...you'll be fine!

  • I've never heard it wasn't safe but my step-mom is a hairstylist and she says that the color might come out a little off because of the elevated horomones.

  • I've told this story before on here, but my mom was a salon owner and dyed hair, gave perms, etc the entire time she was pg w/me.  She then went on to open an in home salon in our basement, and had me in a playpen within a few feet of her clients-so again I was exposed to chemicals on a daily basis.  I can say with 99.9% certainty I am normal and not scarred for life due to this experience.  Please dye your hair, you will cause more damage to your baby by stressing over it...  oh, and stop listening to what people like your in laws say.  Most of the time they don't know what the hell they're talking about:)  Just do what your comfortable with!
