Marathon Runners -- How far are you running now?

I'm just curious -- I forgot to talk about exercising at my first doctor's appointment.  I've done 3 marathons, one of them was at 7 weeks with this pregnancy.  Now my longest distance is about 8 miles and I run around 25-30 miles a week (my runs range from about 4-8 miles in distance).  I feel fine and I'm sure when I bring it up with my doctor I'll be okayed to keep running, but I'm just wondering how far everyone else is going. Thanks in advance!

  • Ugh...you inspire me!  I have been too tired.  I mean come home from work and go to bed tired.  I try to run or do cardio 3x/week.  Before this I ran 2 marathons and some fun runs here and there.

  • I decided after last year's Boston that i would not be doing another marathon for a while, but I still consider myself a marathoner. I was running 9-11 miles almost every day up until late July. I had to cut back to 7-8mi/day to get pregnant and have since dropped down to about 6, at a slower pace. The big problem now (that I recently posted on this board about) is that I have to pee when I run! I never thought it would be so hard to run because of something so silly, but it's miserable. Good luck and keep up the good work!

  • My doctor said I could keep running as long as I'm comfortable. I'm trying to run around 20 miles per week (4-6 miles per run), but I get tired much more easily these days. I ran a half marathon when I was 4 weeks pg, and I'm scheduled to run another around 20 weeks, but I don't know if that will happen!
  • I have also run 3 marathons and for the first half of my pregnancy running was not a big problem, however, I've since been diagnosed with placenta pervia and am not allowed to run anymore :(  Run while you can!!  I'm MISS it!
  • I have asked my doc about this specifically and she said that as long as it was something I was doing pre-pregnancy, then it should be fine.  She said the biggest thing is to listen to your body and if you start feeling any aches, pains, cramps, etc. to stop.  She said getting your heart rate up to 160 should be fine, but I'm not sure I would let it get over that.
  • I was training for my 3rd marathon when I got pregnant. I ran my normal, non-training mileage of 30-35 mpw until 20ish weeks, I maintained 25 mpw through 26 weeks and ran a half marathon at 26 weeks. From 26-30 weeks I ran about 20 mpw and now I'm down to about 10-15 mpw but only because I've got some weird kind of leg injury that I think may be pregnancy induced. I ran an 8k at 32 weeks and running still feels great to me, but my injury is holding me back right now. I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant. My doctors have been super supportive of my running and I've had an excellent pregnancy and the running still feels really good most of the time.

Wow, do/did you take bathroom breaks throughout? That's my number one running pain, ugh!

  • I had to stop running at about 20 weeks due to spotting. I can't wait to start back up again so I can train for my next marathon.

  • I ran a 1/2 marathon yesterday. It was my third one this pregnancy.

My weekly mileage is a bit inconsistent, and my pace is slower. I'm running or run/ walking no more than 20 miles a week.

  • Laxbugg-Peeing was horrible for me from the beginning until about week 28, I just made sure that I was always within a mile of a bathroom! I live in a good sized city so I just make sure my running route always has bathroom access. Now I'm doing mostly treadmill running because I don't feel comfortable running in the dark by myself, so that's easy access to a bathroom. During my last half at 26 weeks I had to stop 5 times, it was insane! But at my 8k two weeks ago I didn't go at all, so you never know. I actually feel like I have to pee less on my runs these days even though baby is way down there!
  • i would check with your doctor to be sure...i ran a 1/2 in march of this year, but once i found out i was preggo (and high risk) i was not allowed to run...until i got the ok two weeks ago, but 3.0 mph on the treadmill and no sweating is not my idea of a 'run' lol:)  lots of walking for me now, but i can't wait to run again soon:)
  • I've run 4 marathons and plan to do more in the future.  For me, it is harder running after giving birth than it was while I was pregnant.  I'm just now back up to 20 miles per week and my pace is so slow.  I'm worried I'll never PR again but I'm not giving up.

I ran until I was 36 weeks pregnant and then my hips simply wouldn't allow it anymore.

  • I ran a marathon at 25 weeks pregnant and a half marathon distance the weekend before I gave birth. I continued my weekly mileage of 55-60 miles until 30 weeks, then scaled down to about 40 miles per week.

I ran my first post pregnancy marathon 2 months after giving birth and it was actually a lot easier than before the pregnancy. I felt great and was faster than before.

  • I have 14 marathons under my belt but was never a high mileage runner.  I usually put in 40-45 miles/week during marathon training season, with a lot of emphasis on speedwork and tempo runs to get my pace up there.  I'm 29 weeks now and am down to 20 miles/week, 4 days/week.  I ran a half marathon at 19 weeks and felt great, but after that, decided that a nice slacker 20 miles/week routine was just fine :)

I feel great and don't feel any signs that I'll need to stop running.  I haven't gotten very big and I don't have any of the usual aches and pains - e.g., no pelvic floor pain, etc.  The belly doesn't really bounce when I'm running.  So knock on wood, I'm guessing I'll keep up my wimpy 20 mile/week routine through delivery.

I sure do feel like a wimp with such low mileage, though!!

  • I've run 10 marathons, including a 50-mile ultra. I cut my mileage to get pregnant, and after 2 miscarriages, was running 20-30 miles per week until about 20 weeks.  After that, I only ran about 15-20 and slowly cut down until I was only running 1-2 miles a day until my water broke.
