Registry content question

So, I've got some conflicting info from people I've spoken to about registries and thought I would see what you bumpies thought..

I've registered for some of the big items (stroller/ carseat combo, glider and ottoman, breastpump, etc) but I also have a lot of the smaller items on there (diapers, baby clothes, burpcloths). I have heard that you shouldn't put clothes, receiving blankets, toys and burp clothes on the registry b/c then you end up getting too much of that stuff and none of the things you actually need... But if I take those items off the registry, I end up with only expensive items and it just starts to look like I'm gift grabbing for the big stuff! The main reason I put the big stuff on there is for the discount if I don't get them... Now I don't know if I should take the smaller items off or not..

Help!!

Re: Registry content question

  • I have some of my big ticket items on there as well as bottles, diapers, etc... You need to have a wide range of prices available.  :)

  • As long as you have some med-low priced items, you are fine. Everyone puts the big ticket items on their registries for the discount and/or sometimes people want to chip in and buy one bigger present. Your are totally fine. I just wouldn't bother registering for clothes/burp clothes etc, because you will get a TON.

But I'm assuming you have a diaper pail, maybe a diaper warmer, some nursery decor items etc. Those are all good med priced items.

How do you know if you have too many of the big items or the little items? I feel like I did it all wrong!!

  • I would recommend doing a lot of things with different price points.  Some people like to combine a lot of smaller items into one gift (i.e. bath stuff).  Clothes is a different story - when I registered at BRU with my first, they said not to register for clothes b/c they turnover with each season and might not be in stock.  Personally, I would take it easy on registering for a lot of toys b/c they can't use them for so long.
  • i wouldnt put baby clothes or burp cloths (unless you really want a specific kind) on the registry since ppl will get that for you anyway.  try to add items in a variety of price ranges (bottle system, diaper bag, baby bathtub, etc)  if you're worried about only asking for the big ticket items.

  • I don't want to get hundreds of clothes either, but I still put them on there so people know my taste and will (::knock on wood::) choose from my list instead of just picking something they like.

Not sure where you registered, but Target's registry gives a "guide" of how many things you should have in each category.  I, however, have more in the lower price ranges than they "think" I should.  You should just register for what you need.  I don't expect anyone to purchase my bigger items (i.e. PNP and swing), but I put them on the for the completion coupon.  Don't worry about what others think about your registry.  You know what you need and want for baby :)

  • I would leave them on there. If you get too many of those items, return them and use the money towards the big ticket items.

  • I understand how you feel.  I originally left off blankets, burp cloths, etc., but added items like bottles, pacifiers, sheets, etc.  I'm having a shower when I'm home over Christmas and now that people have started buying stuff I've had people comment to me that I don't have enough big stuff on my registry (I thought I had too much) and that I'm missing burp cloths, blankets, etc.  So I went through and added some blankets & burp cloths today, but I still didn't add any clothes.  I can't think of any other big stuff to add because I'm not putting my furniture on there (although some people have told me I should).  The only other thing I can add is a breast pump, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that.  I think I'm just going to keep watching my registry and if I notice I really need more items in a price range I'll see if I can come up with anything.

Whoa sister!  Take a deep breath!  There are no "rules" to registries.  It's just a convenient way to let people know what you want/need right now.  You can always exchange something later :)

  • Thanks for all the advice! This really helped...

  • I registered for all the big ticket items and then smaller items, like sheets (to go with theme), sleep sacks, bottles, some toys, etc.  I did not register for very many blankets or clothes.  I figure people will get all those items for me anyway.
  • Keep them on! You can always take them back, but I don't think you can have enough receiving blankets, etc.

  • what about sheets, things for the crib and the nursery?

My MIL is making all the bedding and curtains and things so I don't want to put any of that stuff on there.. Maybe just sheets but she has a TON of fabric and is making extras of everything...

  • Even without things like clothes and blankets, you should have a good mix of prices for other basics. Things like diaper cream, baby wash, bottles, and sheets are low-priced, and things like bouncers, playmats, and diaper bags tend to be mid-priced.

We didn't register for any clothes, but we did register for a couple receiving blankets that we liked along with some cloth diapers to use as burp cloths, and while we did receive a few extra of each, I still preferred the ones we had chosen ourselves.
