Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If you had a 6 pounder, what size clothes did LO wear?

I am being induced tonight because my LO is measuring small (last week 5 lbs. 13 oz). I didn't have any newborn size clothes since everyone I know told me it was a waste and that their babies outgrew them so fast. Knowing how little he might be, I went out and bought about 5 newborn size outfits. Do you think that will be enough? How long did your LO wear nb size? The premie size looked so tiny and the label said up to 5 lbs so I didn't get any.

  • My LO was 6.5 when she was born.  She's a month old now and is still in newborn size clothing.  She's finally starting to fit into her pants.  She should have been in premies when she was born, though.  She drowned in the newborns for the first few weeks.  She just got to 7lbs on Friday, though.  So, maybe another week or two and she'll be able to start using 0-3 size.

  • DS was 6lbs 6oz and is just starting to grow out of the NB clothes (only in length though - 0-3 clothes are still too big in his waist).
  • DS was 6 lb, 18 inches at birth and was swimming in newborn size clothes.  We borrowed a few premie outfits from a friend, which he wore for about 2 weeks before moving into newborn, which he wore until about 6/7 weeks.
  • We actually had to get a couple of preemie outfits for her. She was 6 pounds 6 ounces when born, but went down to 5 pounds 9 ounces after birth. She was in the preemie outfits for about 2 weeks. We tried the NB on her when she got out of the hospital, but the clothes were enormous! Some preemie outfits are bigger than others, you just have to look through them.

ETA: She just moved out of NB size on Thursday, so we got really good use out of her NB clothes.

  • Dillon is in new born now and he is almost at 5lbs. I have to roll up the sleeves and they are not the greatest fit, but it gets the job done.

I am also investing in a couple of packages of the legless gowns with elastic down by his legs, so I don't have to worry about his legs staying in the legs of his big boy clothes.

They are relatively inexpensive - a pack of 3 costs about $10 at walmart. He spits up a lot when he eats right now, so we are getting them for quick changes without spending huge money on more newborn outfits.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Newborn, which was swimming on them when we left the hospital.  They could have fit in preemie for a week or two, but I think the NB size was comfy.  Gerber NB kimono shirts fit perfectly (they run small), and are easy to put on & take off for those first few weeks.

  • DD was 6lbs6oz at birth, and still fits into some of her preemie clothes, but is mostly into 0 - 3mths (which she swims in most of, but with it snowing here, better to be warmer, since I can bury her hands in the larger sized sleepers).
  • My daughter was 6lbs. 10oz. and she wore NB for the first month of her life.
  • my LO was 6lbs 12oz and wore newborn sizes for the first month, after he caught up and gained weight he is now in size 3month or 3-6month! I'd invest in a pack or two of not expensive newborn sizes, if you need more its easy for someone to run out and get you more!
  • She was 7lb 5 oz and 6lb 9 oz when we left the hospital. She *just* outgrew nb clothes but can actually still fit into some of them even though she is over 10 lbs now (maybe she is short?) Anyway I am sure you will get a TON of use out of your NB clothes. I thought my girl would be too big for them and I didnt buy much either. I bought more once she was here!
  • my LO was 6lbs 8oz and wore newborn clothes for the first 3 weeks
  • My son was 6lbs14.5oz and he was in NB size for a month!
  • Katie was 6lb 12oz.  She was 21.5 inches long so she doesn't fit length wise in preemie clothes. We have her in newborn sizes and 0-3 months. All manufacturers sizing is different. We just end up rolling up the sleeves on most of her clothes so her hands are free.

  • DD was 5-3 at birth and she is now 6-15. 0-3 is still HUGE on her. She will be in NB for a little while longer.

  • LO was 6lbs 3oz at birth, 5lbs 6oz when we took him home. we had NO newborn stuff because they said he would be a very big baby, which if he hadn't been born at 35 weeks he might have been :)

We went out an purchased 3 or 4 newborn outfits, or we put him in the larger gowns we had, he outgrew them by week 5, but they were worth it.

He's now 13lbs 3oz and 24.5 inches and has outgrown his Gerber brand 0-3 clothes, and can't even get close to his newborn clothes...

  • I would definitely get some preemie outfits, but also have some newborn on hand too.
  • DS was 6 lbs 5 oz.  We had gone out and bought some newborn sleepers "just in case" and just didn't wash them until we knew how big he was.  They were pretty big on him at first, but those 5 or 6 sleepers are pretty much what he's lived in this past month.  I put some 0-3 clothes on him yesterday just because I wanted to see him in something new - still big, but doable now.
  • DD was 7 lb 10 oz when she was born and she is still in newborn clothing.  They are still very large on her and there is no way she will fit in 0-3 for at least another few wks.

  • My son was 7 lbs. 4 oz, and we are still using NB. They're starting to fit a little better, but he's definitely not out of them yet (even though he's now ver 8 pounds).
