Right hand numb and painful...

This morning when I woke up, my right hand was tingly, like pins and needles.  I assumed I slept on it wrong.  It got better after my shower.  Then when I was drying my hair, it went numb again and has not fully recoved...two hours later.  And all of my finger joints hurt.  My left hand is not numb, but the joints hurt there too.  Anyone else experience this?  I hate to call the doctor over something so little, but I am kind of freaking out.  All of the books say to call if you experience numbness, which I obviously am.  Thoughts?

PS. The last week or so, I have really started to swell up, buy my blood pressure is down, so I don't think that could be causign it.

  • Sounds like carpal tunnel.  See the post about 5 down.

  • Buy the carpal tunnel wrist gaurds and sleep with them. I can't go without anymore. They make a huge difference. You can find them at any drugstore. Cost about $20 each.
    siggy should be here!
  • Yep carpel tunnel.  It's caused by swelling in your lower arms around your wrists.  I had it really bad a month or so ago when we were painting the house.  It will go away once the swelling goes away.  I've heard the wrist bands work but haven't tried them.  Mine gradually went away after we were done painting but I still wake up with numb hands at night.  If you change positions and keep your hands lower than your heart (not up by your head) when you sleep that might help.
  • Carpal tunnel. My left hand has been tingly and numb off and on for the last month. It's annoying, but you learn to live with it. I also have severe pain in both of my wrists that I haven't quite learned to live with it.

The hormones running through your body and the swelling you're experiencing is putting extra pressure on those nerves/ligaments and that's what is causing the carpal tunnel. My doctor said it should go away within a few weeks of delivery. If it doesn't, she wants to refer me to a hand surgeon. No thanks!

FWIW, the braces didn't help me at all. In fact, the lack of movement actually made the pain worse for me.

  • Sounds like the lovely carpal tunnel to me.  I've got it too...a total PITA.  It started in just one hand and now I have it in both :(  You can get a brace to wear at night, but I never did.  Hang in there!
  • Carpel tunnel...I get that same sensation at night, but in both hands; couple that with getting up to go to the bathroom at night I can squeeze in about 3 hours of sleep total.Sleep
