need advice...sensitve topic

My dear friend just told me she had a miscarriage last week. I want to do something nice for her but don't want to overwhelm her.

Does anyone have any ideas for a little something that would be appropriate? I was thinking a massage or flowers.

TIA

  • I don't have any words of wisdom for you, but I'm so sorry to hear that.

  • Speaking from experience, the 2 things that people did that I remember were bringing us a meal, you just don't really feel like cooking. And also I have a few friends that bought me a rememberence bracelet, that had 3 charms; one signifying the month the baby was conceived, one signifying the month of the miscarriage, and one signifying the month the baby was to be born.  I didn't really wear it much but I have it in my jewelry box as a way to not forget that little life.  I was 9 weeks when I m/c'd so I don't know how appropriate those things might be for her?  Also I would say sending a card like a month later or on the EDD just to say you're thinking of her is so nice b/c it feels like no one but you and your DH remembers after awhile.

  • I have had two and one of the them happened on Dec. 26th.  One of the things one of my friends did for me was buy me an ornament and had calligaphied Remembering '06.  Every year now when I get the tree out now, it is a nice rememberance.  The other one was in the spring, and she made me dinner.  Just being there is really the most important thing because a lot of people just try to say things to make you feel better and sometimes it felt better just talking.

  • I think offering to take dinner over to their house is a nice gesture.  I'm sorry for your friend's loss.
  • A few friends of mine planted a tree in remembrance.  Perhaps that or some bulbs for the birth month the baby would have been born, (Borrowing sort of from what Whitney and her husband did for their parents when Joss was born--great idea!).
