NBR : Recommend your kitchen appliances

DH and I are going to be refrigerator and stove/oven shopping.  Which we are not looking foward to, but we need to.   Is your fridge a side by side, fridge on top model? Do you like it and why? Also what brand is it, and have you had any problems with it?

Thanks!

  • We have a fridge with french doors and the freezer on the bottom, and its the best!  I can't believe anyone would like it any other way lol.  Also, if you have gas hookups, I really like the stoves with the gas top but electric oven.  Best of both worlds!  We have GE, and have never had one problem.  GL!

  • We have a side by side hotpoint fridge... it's that kind that looks like stainless but doesn't hold fingerprints (but still can hold magnets).  My only gripe about it is that the fan in the freezer can get condensation in it sometimes and make a "hooting" sort of sound when it's on... especially if there's too much stuff in the freezer.

Our stove, microwave, and dishwasher are also hotpoint to match, the stove is gas.  All in all I like our appliances.

  • we have a side by side with the ice in the door fridge and I love the ice in the door feature! it gives me more shelf space in the freezer and the ice tends to not clump and stuff at the bottom of the ice maker. Im pretty sure it is a Maytag
  • We recently bought a Dishwasher - and my parents are building a house and they let me help pick out the appliances.  We have a Bosch dishwasher.  We picked it because we needed one NOW and between Lowes, Home Depot, and Sears - it was the only black one in stock that was super quiet and didn't have a plastic interior (wanted stainless steal on the inside).

I learned a LOT while shopping with my parents.  The bought a stove top and seperate oven, but they are both Bosch also and they had by FAR the better options.  But Bosch only makes side by side refrigerators and they wanted one with the freezer on the bottom.  But the thing about those - the ice maker is in the refridgerator section and it takes up a lot of space.  There was 1 brand (sorry - I THINK it is Samsung or LG) that had a smaller ice box design so it didn't take up so much room.  Other fridge brands were buying it from them - I know GE was one.  So that may be something to look for in a fridge if you go with freezer on bottom.

btw - we got our dishwasher at Sears.  Mom and Dad got all their appliances at Lowes.

  • We have all Frigidaire stainless steel appliances except for the fridge.  Our fridge is the GE profile stainless steel french door/bottom freezer.  All have been great.  I love the french door bottom freezer style.
  • We LOVE our LG appliances. Our fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher and washer/dryer are all LG and we haven't had one problem with them. The fridge is huge but not too big, plus makes tons of ice without taking up too much room. I love the dishwasher because it is also big, but runs very quietly. I've got a ceramic flat top stove (would have loved gas, but we didn't feel like running a gas hook up at the time... someday), that works great and actually holds the heat really well.

  • our set is the GE profile and we love it, works great. The fridge is the side by side fridge/freezer.
  • When we bought our house we bough all Frigidaire appliances.  The oven and fridge work great.  The Fridge is a side by side.  I would've wanted the french drawer one but because of the space it is in we wouldn't be able to open the freezer drawer.  Oven is gas.  I can't do electric.
  • I've been really happy with our LG and GE appliances, not as happy with the Whirlpool. My mom has the "gourmet" brands, Thermador, Sub-Zero, Viking, and Bosch.... The Sub-Zero has been great, the Viking good, the Bosch dishwasher great, but the Bosch washer/dryer not that great, and the Thermador convection oven- HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. Nothing but problems. It won't heat evenly  and there are always dark spots, it won't keep the right temperature... And Thermador and the appliance store kept blaming each other. It's 1.5 years old...last T-Day (it was only a month old), the stupid thing stopped working so we had NO OVEN!!! In the meantime, my mom spent thousands on an oven that isn't as good as my GE range.... STAY AWAY FROM THERMADOR!!!

  • I used to work in the appliance department in Home Depot for a couple of years.  I can give you my advice on choosing appliances.

First off I have all GE Profile. I love them. I am super happy with them and never had a problem. My stove is convection and my fridge is a french door (bottom freezer).

As far as fridges are concerned....

The regular standard fridge with the top freezer, is obviously cheaper. Most of the customers coming into buy these types of fridges though, weren't buying them for themselves. They were more for apartments that they rent or for people who were like one person living by themselves.

Side by side fridges are super nice. The downside to them.... There isn't as much space that you would find in a regular fridge or a bottom freezer. If you are the type of people that love to entertain and have big dinners like thanksgiving and such, side by side fridges could become a problem for you since you cannot store big platters in there. You would have to find another way of storing these things or have a second fridge somewhere.

The french door (bottom freezer). I may be a little biased because I own one but I find these to be the most practical. You get the same freezer space as you would a top freezer, and definitely more than a side by side. It seems awkward that the freezer is on the bottom but realistically, how often do you go into the freezer? The fridge is usually the most used part and having it on the top makes everything right at hands reach. The downside to this fridge is if you get one with an icemaker on the door you will lose the shelving space on the door.  It may not seem like a big deal but I can tell you that it is. Both sides of our doors are packed with stuff. The other downside is if you have back problems then the bottom freezer probably isn't the best choice because the bending over could become problematic. I also find my cat loves to go in there when the freezer is open and I have to chase him out before I roll it back.

As far as the stove is concerned....

A stove is a stove. I have the GE Profile Convection with the griddle in the middle. I love it. It has a built in thermometer so when your food reaches a certain temperature it shuts off and stops cooking so that you don't overcook your meats. It also has a warming drawer on the bottom so when one dish is done, I can put it in there to keep warm until everything is finished and dinner is ready.

As far as finishes are concerned.

Black you see all the dust. Not a huge deal but something to point out.

White is traditional but can turn color after awhile.

Stainless Steel is beautiful, always way more expensive ($100-$200 more) but you have to use a cleaner on to keep the finger prints off.

Bisque I think is the best. It has to match your kitchen obviously but since it already has an ivory color you won't notice if it turns color from years of cooking and if you just can't get to the cleaning right away it's not as noticeable.

There are other finishes now called Titanium and Clean Steel. These look like stainless steel but they have a matte finish. Eliminating the amount of finger prints you will see on the fridge itself and you can also hang magnets. (you'd be surprised as to how many customers didn't buy SS appliances because they loved their magnets).

  • I am not sure what your needs are but we have Wolf and Sub Zero appliances.  They are very expensive.  I can also recommend Samsung appliances and also GE.  We have separate fridge and  freezers, however I like the french doors as well as the bottom freezer.
