If you put LOs down while still awake...

If he doesn't fall asleep how long to you let LO lie in bed awake before you go get him?

I usually put DS down for a nap before he is fully asleep. Usually he falls asleep within a minute or two, but sometime he wakes up when I lay him in his pnp. He doesn't cry just wiggles a little, makes some sounds, and looks around. If he cries, I go get him right away. But, if he's just not sleeping, I feel guilty just leaving him there. After about 5 minutes, I go in to check on him, reinsert paci, and lay my hand on his stomach. If this doesn't calm him down, I pick him up and rock him until he is sleepy again (though sometimes, he decides he's not sleepy after all!)

I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing.

Re: If you put LOs down while still awake...

  • At 4weeks I don't think I was doing this but now I lay LO down and he dances and talks for about 15-20min (bedtime) and then is out for the night. He never cries at bedtime, naps are another story. I only mess with him if he cries, if he is just dancing then I leave him alone.

  • LO falls asleep when we put her in, if not she will be awake for a few then fall asleep.

  • I keep all the lights off when I get my 3 week old at night, so I can't always tell if she is exactly asleep or not when I put her back down.  Sometimes she will make some noises and ruch around for a little while.  I don't get her until she starts crying, or almost crying.  Half of the time, she nods off by herself.
  • I let her stay till she either falls asleep or starts wimpering/ crying. As soon as she starts crying I pick her up and start over, I never let her just cry. It's suprising tho cuz sometimes she will stir around for 45 minutes before she falls in a deep sleep. She is 8 weeks

  • If he's not crying or fussing I just let him be. We co-sleep so putting a hand on his chest usually gets him calm even if it doesn't put him to sleep. I think most nights LO is the last one asleep. DH and I practically fall asleep when our heads hit the pillow.

  • Like pp's I don't mess with her unless she's upset. I feel a little guilty about it too, but I just remind myself, that just because she's awake doesn't mean she isn't tired.
  • We've been putting DS down before he's asleep.  If he's really cranky we will hold him to get him to relax.  As long as he's quiet and not in distress, we let him lay there and talk and he usually falls asleep in 10 minutes.

  • I leave her be unless/until she starts fussing.  Then I'll go in and rock her until she's drowsy enough to fall asleep.  Sometimes she'll just lay there for 20-30 minutes without making a sound

  • If DD's just laying there not fussing, I leave her b/c she may fall asleep eventually on her own. If she is fussing, I put paci in her mouth and put my hand on her chest to calm her. If she's crying I get her up and rock her.
