Unswaddling

When did you start doing this successfully and did you do it gradually or "cold turkey"?  I am debating on whether to try this.  Evan has been sleeping really well, so I do not want to alter that, but he is growing out of the small Swaddleme and I am debating on whether to buy the medium or to try him unswaddled.

Re: Unswaddling

  • Do you have the Swaddleme with the detachable swaddling part (we call it the wings).  If so, we use the wings on a bunch of different sleep sacks, and even just over her clothes sometimes for naps.  The wings are still plenty big enough for Tess, and as  long as its tight it never rides up.

  • We tried unswaddling a few weeks back and it was a disaster.  Most she slept was 20 minutes.  Last night I tried again, with just one arm out and same result.  DD still has the startle reflex though.  I am guessing she won't be able to be unswaddled until this is gone.
  • around 4 months we stopped swaddling. At that point he was breaking out of the swaddle anyway, so I just did it cold turkey (well actually he went from the swaddle to a sleep sack)

  • I dont remember her exact age, but I'm guessing it was before I went back to work at 12wks. It was when she was getting too big for the swaddleme and when she started liking her fingers to suck on. We did it gradually-one arm out a few nights, both arms out a few nights, then completely out and in a sleep sack instead. She had no problems with it.
  • ethan was swaddled until 6 months.  I tried cold turkey and it worked for 2 days and then we went back to it.  It didn't reallly work for us until he was ok to sleep on his stomach. Once he didn't freak out when he was on his belly he was fine.
  • We unswaddled around four months, when DD was rolling over in the swaddle. We did it gradually- one arm out, then the other with the swaddle around her stomach, then ditched it completely. It wasn't too bad, but she went through four month wakeful at the same time, so her sleep was so awful it was hard to tell what it did.
  • It makes me giggle when I hear about itty bitty babies outgrowing the small swaddle mes cuz Eve wore the smalls til she was at least 6 months.. I finally went out and got some larges (there is no medium, to my knowledge). We had a few "attempts" at unswaddling all which lasted a few days.. and finally were successful right around 8 months. which I know is super late.. but sleep is sleep!

  • We weren't really able to do the swaddle thing. DD slept in her carseat the first month because that's the only way she would go to sleep at night, so there's no way we could swaddle her in that. The times we did try swaddling her...during naps, etc. she would always break her arms out of them. She doesn't like havent' her arms tucked in. So from then on we have been doing sleep sacks. I would say since about 7 or 8 weeks.
