3rd Trimester

NST turned into afternoon of testing

I have SUA and went in for my first NST yesterday afternoon at 1:30.  She was running a tad bit behind and I had a doctor's appointment at 2:15.  Well, apparently the baby wasn't doing what she wanted and she kept zapping my belly with this buzzer thing.  Something about the heartrate increasing.  I was there until 2:30 (missing my doctor's appointment) when she went to show my doctor the results.  Next thing I know I'm told to skip my doctor's appointment and go to the hospital for more testing.  I had no idea what was going on.  I had planned on taking my daughter to the doctor after my appointment so I had to call the school to change her transportation, call the doctor to cancel her appointment, and call the after-school folks to say she is actually going to be there.  Actually, my husband had to do that because when I get stressed like that, I just cry, so I couldn't really talk to anyone on the phone Smile  So at the hospital people they kept asking me why I was sent over and I really didn't know.  I just kept saying "something about the heartbeat not increasing like it should".  They had the order so apparently what I needed to do was have yet another NST followed by the BPP, which is an u/s looking for things like breathing motions, hand and feet motions, and things like that.

I was so confused and overwhelmed.  I didn't get to leave until 4:30.  I just wish I had more of an explanation of what was going on.  And I also wish she had mentioned that it was normal to fail the NST and go for the BPP.  I'm supposed to have these things twice a week and if this happens every time, I don't know what I'm going to do.

One thing that they mentioned was that my baby went from being in the 51st percentile at my 30 week ultrasound, but she was down to the 36th percentiel this time.  SUA can cause growth to slow, so I have to go back for another u/s in 2 weeks, but I already knew that.

My first pregnancy was so much simpler than this one!

  • I'm sorry about your experience. I had and NST last week. Black Friday. I was sent to triage for contractions. I always worry about my baby not moving alot and thought for sure if anything goes wrong at these NSTs that would be it. but low and behold as soon as I could up on the chair and pulled up my shirt the woman said "you are contracting, can you feel that" I didn't even know I was contracting. I ended up contacting ever 3 to 4 minutes. Freaking me out, she walked me over to triage and said "it might be baby day." I didn't have anything ready. This couldn't be happening. In triage they told me it was irritable and nothing to worry about. I haven't contracted since. I know my situation isn't as severe as yours but I wanted to share that NSTs suck lol.

That's all I was trying to say too!  A lot of fuss for nothing.

Sometimes i feel they are pointless. I went in yesterday and was out 20 minutes later. I mean I understand why they do them. But really. I could kick count at home and not have to drive the hospital every 4 days plus now I have to drive 30 miles away every week to see the OB that's delivering. Too Much is going on and sometimes it's all for nothing. But I guess I'd rather go and have it all go ok then have another triage visit.
