Those who have weaned...

Tell me about it.

My son is at a sleepover for a couple nights with Grandma. I'm thinking that it's time to kick him off the boob. I currently only BF twice a day, before bed and in the morning.

Am I in for a world of pain? How long until I stop producing?

Did anyone else feel guilty for reasons they couldn't quite define? My son is 19 months and I feel that it's time... but at the same time I feel bad for doing this.

  • I have not weaned so no advice there but I totally understand about feeling guilty.  I think it's because babies equate nursing with love so it feels bad for taking it away.  Do it slowly and he'll adjust.  If you don't nurse for a couple days he may want to when he sees you again which I think would be fine to make it gradual.

  • I only breastfed twice a day for the last month or two and I just kind of stopped and there was no pain and I was expecting it to be bad. I think it's good that you've already cut down your supply significantly. I still feel bad because I miss that time when I could just relax and look down at her and just know how close we are. I know we will be close in other ways but nothing like that ever again in her lifetime. Just my two cents
  • I think weaning is harder on the mom than the baby.  Honestly I bet your DC won't mind that much.  I think it is hard for us to let go of that bond and yes the guilt is there but it eventually does subside.

Cut one feeding at a time though.  Pump the other feeding or you will be in a world of hurt. In a couple days you shouldn't have any soreness at all. I have been done bfing for a couple months but sometimes I still find milk and I swear I have felt like I let down at times.

  • I am trying to wean right now.  Mostly because at her last check up (15 months) the doc is worried she is too small.  She thinks that since she is still BF she is doing that more instead of eatting.  Also, since I do not pump, we aren't sure how much BM she actually is getting.

My pedi said she thinks that after 1 year most of the time supply drops and it becomes more of an emotional issue for the child instead of nutrition.

Good luck.  I feel the guilt too.  I also am already starting to miss the cuddling and comfort it gives her.

  • I was down to only am and pm nursing by 13 months.  I dropped the am feeding and gave DS a sippy when he woke up.  Did this for about 2 weeks.  DH and I went out of town, so I had MIL give him a sippy for the pm feeding.  I brought my pump with but only used it to relieve a little engorgement so I wasn't leaking.  Got back home and he hasn't nursed since.
