Response to Tummy Tuck & C-Section issue...

All, I just finished reading the concerns on my post so I wanted to respond.

My doc has had his practice in Minneapolis for a very long time and is a combination plastic surgeon and OBGYN. He is well known for infertility treatment and care of high-risk patients. I was referred to him by my local Multiples group.

He told me about the special way he likes to do c-sections. How many layers he does sews back together and how it is more than the norm. He said he will cut out the old scar and pull the skin down. He said he will make sure to sew the muscles back together as well.

I have read testimonials from some of his patients and have spoken to several of his post-csection patients as well and all have been thrilled with their care. I am not sure if this is a classical tummy tuck or just what he calls it.

I feel very comfortable in his care regardless.

FaeryStarGazer - I am not sure what posts you were referring to that I needed to read first - I just read the neg tummy tuck comments a few minutes. I assure you I am not stupid. I am, however, very sensitive right now and have received lots of support on this board since I found out I was preg with twins. Your comment was the first one I have seen that was not at all supportive but did bother me a bit. There are different ways of saying things.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I promise you that my husband and I research like crazy and so far feel comfortable with our decision (this doc).

  • I haven't read the other posts yet, but I think I want to borrow your doctor. ;)

I just wanted to make sure I acknowledged the concerns people voiced - just caught up with them tonight. I appreciate so much the advice I receive on here - being pregnant with multiples has been a difficult road for me thus far - but I do think I am someone who makes good decisions.

My doc has a HUGE ego (smile) but he has taken great care of me thus far.

  • Yeah, I don't blame you.

It kind of sounds like it's a modified tummy tuck, anyway...is that right?

If you make it to 12/21, that's my birthday! :D

  • Didn't read your initial post but I say go for it if your dr can do it at the same time as a c-section. I said before I gave birth that I wish I could arrange that...in retrospect i got lucky b/c my skin is not stretched out now but it was also my 1st pregnancy.

    GL!

  • There is a lot of info out there about tummy tucks during c-sections and how they are not considered safe - and that they do not make sense due to the state the body is in at the time of birth, hormones present, etc. I think my doc refers to his as tummy tucks but based on the classical definition of that surgery I think he needs to find new terminology.

He does cut as much of the old scar tissue as possible and does sew the muscles back together - pulling skin/muscle tight as he does it but he does not remove any fat and does not make the incision extra large to accomodate a full tummy tuck.

  • sounds really odd to me, still.. even if it's a modified tummy tuck - i wouldn't feel comfortable having it done with a c/s after everything i read online.

I work with docs all day (i'm a drug rep) and can say that plastic surgeons typically have the biggest egos - the "i can't do wrong" mentality- which IMO, is a bit scary.... not the same type of personality the typical OBGYN has - they tend to be more amiable and care more about the patient....I'd have issues with a plastic surgeon/OBGYN --- just not a great combo to me....

i suppose if you feel comfortable with it- that's your decision.  I hope all goes well for you and the babies.

  • Thanks Goldie - understood. I really felt like I knew what I was getting into after discussing it with so many people and doing research but I am going to chat with him a bit about this on Monday and ask some additional probing questions. He is a vaginal plastic surgeon so it kind of made sense to me that he was also an OBGYN. He does have a big ego though - loves to talk about himself.

  • No one wishes ill for you or your babies, we all hope it goes well for you.  That said, we have given birth and we  know how much our bodies have changed after delivery.  I couldnt imagine having plastic surgery, even modified, at the same time as my c/s.

I just want to say that my twin skin got MUCH worse after I lost all my baby weight.  That is something that you may encounter as well, I know it happened to several MoMs, and then you are kinda back at square one in terms of loose skin.

  • Thanks MrsArc - that makes sense and I will take that into consideration. With my singleton pregnancy I was left with some floppy belly but it went back to normal in about a year - nothing like having twins I am sure (but about to find out!).

I don't think anyone wishes me ill I just want to make sure no one thinks I am a complete moron - I am learning as I go.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

  • Just wanted to add that while I am pretty much free of any opinion on this as I'm a lawyer not a doctor, I do want to request after pics.  Thank you.  Wink

Oh how I wish I had a vaginal plastic surgeon to fix the tears I had with my 1st son!!  I've always been messed up from them and had a really hard recovery.  I actually tore worse with my 2nd, but the doctor did a much better job stitching me up and the recovery was SO much better.  It really makes a difference to have a doctor who knows what they're doing "down there" making the repairs!

With my 2nd, I actually considered birthing at a hospital 1.5 hours away from us because they page a specialized OB surgeon to repair every 3rd and 4th degree tear rather than just having the general OB's fix them.

That would be awesome to have someone like that on hand.  I wish there was one at my OB practice!

  • From someone with severe diastasis, I wish I had a doctor like that! I'm hoping to talk to my OB during my next pregnancy. I do not want a tummy tuck, no skin pulling, no fat taken out, I just want my stomach muscles sown back together! Good luck!

  • Turns out that is exactly what he means when he calls it a tummy tuck. He does cut out some scar tissue but focuses on making sure as many layers are sewn back together as possible.

Another OB I know used him for her c-section so that makes me feel better.

  • The cutting out old scar tissue part is actually pretty standard for repeat c-sections. ?I don't know much about fixing the diastasis, but I have heard about docs doing that before during a c-section.

?Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't think I'd worry that much. ?It really doesn't sound like what he's doing is actually a tummy tuck at all.?
