Breastfeeding

how long do you nurse?

I'm sure this changes, but for the first couple of months, how long does it take LO to get full? Just curious. Thanks!

Re: how long do you nurse?

  • For the 1st couple months anywhere from 15-30 min. Now about 5-15 min.  It also dependds on whether he's nusing because he's hungry or for comfort/to sleep.

  • During the first month, I think it took about 20 minutes. Now it takes 5 minutes at most. I've only fed on one side at a time.

  • We started out at 30-45 minutes per session, but by 5 months we were down to about 25 minutes, and now we are at 10 minutes or so.  Hope that helps!
  • Usually around 20 minutes on the first side and anywhere from 7 to 20 minutes on the second side. My pediatrician said to stop her after 20 minutes because she wouldn't be getting much after that and I would lose my mind.

  • Have to laugh at the other posters, because I'm so frickin' jealous.  DD has nursed 45-60 minutes from birth.  Around 3 months, she started feeding more regularly at the 45 min. mark.  At 5 months, she has fed in 25 minutes or so a handfull of times, but still usually takes 35-45.  She's a dawdler, and that's just who she is.  :D  I let her feed as long as she wants, and have never pulled her off at a certain time, regardless of what one of our less helpful pediatricians recommended.  She's gained weight and grown regularly, so it's obviously working.  I do offer both boobs; sometimes she empties both, sometimes she just wants one, and sometimes she empties one and gets a little of the other; depends on how hungry she is, and whether or not she's going through a growth spurt.

Yeah, I have to disagree with this pediatrician.  My DD nurses longer than 20 minutes in order to trigger more let down responses, and so gets more milk. There is no "not getting much after that."--the more you feed, the more you'll make.  Your boobs never stop producing milk; there's no real "emptying" of your boob.

If your LO wants to keep nursing, there must be a reason for it--she's hungry.   Personally, I would question the training of any doctor who recommends this.  You'll find that most pediatricians don't know much about breastfeeding, and a lot of them dispense stupid advise and other dispense downright dangerous advice. (Dangerous to your milk supply and your breastfeeding success, I mean.)

My advice to you, and M. Monkey, is to check out kellymom.com and talk to an LC or La Leche League about this.  They're professional, seasoned breastfeeders, unlike most pediatricians.

  • 5 minutes if he's focused, 10 minutes if he's sleepy, 15 if he's distracted and pulling on and off the breast!

  • For the first 3 months, my LO took 45-60 minutes per session.  Around 3 months, that time decreased to 25-35 minutes, and now he's down to 10-20 minutes.

ETA: I totally agree with angel555 -- don't taking BFing advice from a pedi.
