3rd Trimester

Any horseback riders?

Anyone ride?  Did you stop riding when you became pregnant or continue to ride?  Anyone still riding in their 3rd tri?

I stopped in 1st tri, but mainly because I had to have knee surgery.  Then my horse went to Houston so I don't ride anymore.

I remember seeing pictures of my Mom pregnant with my younger sister (23 years ago) riding in a show at 6+ months!

Re: Any horseback riders?

  • I don't ride sorry.  Just wondering where in NH you were.  My mom is up in Concord.

  • I don't ride. But do remember reading not to horseback ride... Women who are active, should stay active...But horseback riding wasn't something to continue. Yoga. Running. Water activities..All good.
  • I'm lurking from 2nd tri...  I ride and stopped riding at about 10 weeks.  I didn't want to take a chance and get hurt or hurt LO.  My DH has been nice and riding my horse.

  • I'm a rider, but I haven't ridden since summer 08 (pre-preg obviously).

I was at a show probably 5 years ago and I remember seeing a VERY pregnant woman riding around in a cami and jeans with her bump hanging out in all of its glory. She wasn't competing, so I found it odd that she thought she needed to ride around. I know she wasn't a trainer -- just the friend of another rider.

  • I haven't ridden the entire pregnancy, and I try to keep something between me and my horses (fence, gate, etc.) just in case.  My gals are super broke, but I don't want to take any chances.

I will admit that I picked one of my horses' hooves on Sunday.  She was gimping around with a rock and nobody else was home.  I couldn't stand seeing her hurting.

HARDEST freaking thing I've done all pregnancy!  Seriously.

  • I stopped riding as soon as I found out (5-6 weeks).  My OB said that I should quit before 8 weeks.  My poor horse had a looong vacation from being worked.

I know people who have rode their entire pregnancies and didn't have a problem, but it's not worth the risk IMO.  One wrong step and you fall or get kicked/stepped on could have devastating effects.

  • I rode in my first trimester with DS.  I had a 3 yr old just out of training so I wanted to keep him from getting too spunky.  I put my other horse in a therapeutic riding program so he would continue to get use.  Between DS and working full time, I ended up not having as much time as I wanted with them so ended up re-homing both of them.  Sad  I'm hoping to get back into it after this little one is born.  That and DS is going to need a pony sooner than later!  My Dr. during my first pregnancy also had horses and said that I had a greater chance of hurting myself riding than hurting the baby.  He was more worried about my balance than anything.  I sure miss it.
  • I actually quit riding a few months before I got pregnant because the barn I rode at moved.   But I had intended to quit as soon as I got a BFP.  I was riding jumpers though and was mostly scared of falling.  I miss it, but I'm really not sure I'll be able to work the horses back into my schedule once baby is here.

I lives about 15 minutes outside of Concord.  Where in MA are you?  IL's live in Framingham.

  • I quit riding at 14 weeks, but if I still had my old gelding I probably would have kept riding.  He was really broke, and the only way to fall off of him is if he were to roll over and die while you were on him.  I had him for over 10 years and never fell off him once.

I've heard of barrel racers continuing to compete well into their 8th month.  Now that's some major trust in your horse.  I'm a team roper, so there's no way I would have continued competing while pregnant.

I'm gonna AW my big gelding for a sec, I sure miss him :(

Im actually like 20 min from Framingham.  I have to go there later to go to BRU.  I'm in the middle of nowhere, everything is 20min from me.

  • My sisters old boss trained horses (barrel racing) and rode until the day before delivery.  Her doc ok'd it since she did it all the time before being pg.

Her belly was bruised at the bottom from hitting the saddle, but her son was perfectly healthy.  And this was 18 years ago...

  • I stopped riding as soon as I found out I was pregnant. ?Falling off while PG didn't seem like that great of an idea to me. ?I miss it so much..can't wait to start up again!
