Speaking of post-partum bellies...

Did anyone have a severe separation of your diastasis recti(ab muscles separate down the middle of your stomach?)

I have my 6 week appt. with my doc tomorrow and I know I have separation to some degree, I hope it is not too bad.  Did anyone have success bringing muscles back together through exercise?

Did any of you need to have the muscles surgically brought back together?  (It's not a cosmetic procedure, if it's bad it can effect your posture, lead to possible hernia, all kinds of bad stuff)...

Re: Speaking of post-partum bellies...

  • My aunt carried twins to 38 weeks and needed surgery for a hernia and the diastasis recti.  She had a tummy tuck at the same time.  Her recovery was painful at first, but several years on now, she's doing fantastically.

Depending on the severity of the separation, your doctor might prescribe exercise or rest or something before suggesting surgery.

  • Depending on severity, there are things that can be done.  There is a book:  Lose your mommy tummy, that gives exercises.

it can take a really long time, though.  Months to a year.

Personally, mine was so bad there was no way.  But since I was going to get pregnant again I didn't want surgery.  After this one...we'll see.

  • Mine was separated after DD's birth and then we got pregnant with the twins. My doc will be doing a tummy tuck immediately following the c-section and will put everything back together - and will also be doing a tubal ligation.

  • I had some separation after the birth of my daughter (a singleton) and then carried my triplets to a day shy of 36 weeks (and I am petite.)  The separation is horrible now (my MFM did sew some of them back together with my c-section) and I have back problems as a result.  I was told that I could exercise but that it would not bring those muscles back together - only surgery would.

My girls are 2 and a half years old and I continue to see improvements on NOT looking pregnant (w/out really exercising). I think some of it is just giving your body time to heal.

I might have the surgery someday - too difficult to fit that into my schedule now.

  • How was this diagnosed?  Did you have pain or did your doctor just catch-it post partum?

I can see it. When I am laying on my back my stomach is soft and flat. As I start to sit up my internal organs bulge out, laterally, along my mid-section. Also I need to use my arms still to sit up, my abdominal wall won't do it.

  • i trained with julie tupler, who wrote Lose your Mummy tummy.  you need to wear a splint and do the exercises in her book.  it will resolve the diastasis but it will take time and commitment to the exercises.

    hope this helps :)

  • My mom had 5 kids and had the bad diastatsis, she had it corrected with surgery and tummy tuck, she was always in pain with her back, I mean always.  After surgery, rarely in pain and was able to exercise better too.  She lots 30lbs and is much happier.
