Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your LO start using utensils?

Noah will be 11 months on Sat and shows no interest in any utensils. He feeds himself finger foods just fine. Is there a way to encourage him to use them, and use them properly, in the near future.

Can't wait to join you ladies in a month!

Re: When did your LO start using utensils?

  • I cannot remember exactly, but I think it was around 12 months.

  • Encourage using them?  Sure, just put a form or spoon out for him with each meal.  My DD started to pick hers up and copy us using them well before she was a year old.

Use them properly?  Not that I know of.  DD often likes to hold the fork in one hand while eating with the other...

  • My DD has just recently started using a fork.  I have to help her get the food on the fork but she's really good at getting it in her mouth.  Spoons, not so much.  She puts it in upside down so the food falls off.  So we are sticking with forks for now.

I'm not in a hurry.  She'll get it eventually.

  • I started giving them to DS well before a year.  He would eat so fast so I decided to give a fork a try.  Then he picked it up right away and had to really concentrate to stab his food.  Now at 18 mo he is pretty good at both the spoon and fork.  Well.....not good enough to eat soup...but most food goes in the mouth by way of fork or spoon.

  • DD has been using a spoon since about one but she is almost two and still prefers to use her hands.  I have to keep reminding her to use her spoon or fork.

  • While my son started using them somewhere around a year, I wouldn't say he really used them until the past month or two. Before he would pick up a utensil and poke food with it, then give up and use his fingers. Now he's all about the utensils and he won't eat unless he has a fork. He's 19 months.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just continue to give him utensils and wait until he figures it out on his own.

  • I wouldn't push it.  THere isn't a real reason to as long as they are eating IMO.  DS demanded a fork at about 11 months and gets one with most meals.  He uses it properly when he feels inclined to do so and uses his hands if not.  I don't care in the slightest.
  • We started introducing utensils at about 11 or 12 months, but she didn't use them regularly until about 15 months.
